THE LATEST TIMBER PACKAGING & PALLET INDUSTRY NEWS

Are your pallets Brexit ready?

DAYS HOURS MINUTES SECONDS

From 1st January 2021, all timber packaging and pallets moving between the UK and the EU must meet ISPM15 international standards by undergoing heat-treatment and marking. All Wood Packaging Material (WPM) may be subject to official checks either upon or after entry to the UK and the EU. WPM includes wooden pallets, boxes, crates, spools, cable drums and dunnage.

What is ISPM15? International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM15) sets out measures required to reduce the risk of the introduction and spread of wood boring insects. WPM must be heated to a core temperature of 56°C and this temperature must be maintained for a minimum duration of 30 minutes, with the packaging modules marked with a specific licensed ISPM15 mark. The standard is regulated in Ireland by the Forest Service and the NSAI.

As it stands, the current advice is that from January 1st:
• WPM going from ROI to UK mainland will need to be HT
• WPM coming from UK mainland to ROI will need to be HT
• WPM going from ROI to NI will not need to be HT
• WPM coming from NI to ROI will not need to be HT
• WPM going from NI to UK mainland will not need to be HT
• WPM coming from UK mainland to NI will need to be HT

A Brexit FAQs document has been drafted for the pallet industry and end users of pallets by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) which can be accessed here.
