Swindon Railway Festival

The Swindon Railway Festival returns to STEAM on Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th September 2023, 10am – 5pm!

Experience the amazing detail of over 20 of the UK’s finest model railway layouts that will be uniquely displayed alongside iconic Swindon-built locomotives. You’ll also see new special exhibitions, unique trade stands, modelling demos, traction engine display and a real ale bar!

The Great Western Brick Show

The Great Western Brick Show returns on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th October 2023! The event showcases the very latest and best models built by Brickish members around the UK.

Come along to see some amazing displays, help build a giant LEGO mosaic and visit the marketplace to pick up the very best deals around.

In a Man’s World

There is still time to see our brand-new special exhibition 'In a Man’s World' which gives voice to four female pioneers in railway engineering.

This exhibition will feature previously unseen objects from the STEAM collection, putting the lives of these inspiring women into context.

Admission to special exhibitions is included with STEAM admission and free to STEAM Season Ticket holders.

Orient Express – An Artistic Train Ride Through Europe

We have a fantastic new temporary exhibition opening on the 16th September 'Orient Express - An Artistic Train Ride through Europe'.

The exhibition was conceived in lockdown by European members of the SAQA group who met online. The exhibition creates an artistic link between the home countries of the different members along the theme of the Orient Express, the luxury train service which links Paris and Istanbul.

Admission to special exhibitions is included with STEAM admission and free to STEAM Season Ticket holders.

Retail Spotlight

This month's retail spotlight is the STEAM exclusive 'BR Class 52 Western Enterprise D1000 Model'.

This model is a limited edition of 500 engines (across the 3 variances), to celebrate an icon of Swindon's diesel hydraulic railway history. In her striking desert sand livery this model also features the small yellow warning panel to improve trackside safety. An exclusive 'Diesel Decades' souvenir booklet is included in the presentation box. This model is also DCC Ready.

The past month has been very busy at STEAM, we have had lots of exciting events and activities. These have included celebrating 100 years of the Castle Class locomotives, welcoming lots of children with our Kids for a Quid summer promotion, enjoying the wonderful Jack Boskett exhibition and much more!

Steam - Museum of the Great Western Railway

Today is the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the GWR’s famous Castle Class locomotives. In celebration of this Object of the Month takes a look at one of the most iconic locomotives of the class, No. 4073 Caerphilly Castle, which is on display at STEAM. **

Caerphilly Castle was the first of its class to roll off the production line at Swindon Works on 23rd August 1923. In total 171 Castle Class engines were built, including rebuilds, between 1932 and 1950. They be... came the GWR’s most successful express passenger locomotive at that time, operating on all of the GWR’s main lines.
