Texas Observes Juneteenth
Juneteenth,
celebrated on June 19, is the name given to Emancipation Day by
African Americans in Texas. On that day in 1865 (almost 2 years after
Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation) Union Major-General
Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 to the people of Galveston.
It stated:
"The
people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation
from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This
involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of
property between former masters and slaves, and the connection
heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and
hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their
present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will
not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be
supported in idleness either there or elsewhere."
Large
celebrations on June 19 began in 1866 and continued regularly into
the early 20th century. African Americans treated this day like the
Fourth of July, and the celebrations contained similar events. In the
early days, Juneteenth celebrations included a prayer service,
speakers with inspirational messages, reading of the Emancipation
Proclamation, stories from former slaves, food, red soda water,
games, rodeos, and dances.
The
celebration of June 19 as Emancipation Day spread from Texas to the
neighboring states of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. It also
appeared in Alabama, Florida, and California as African American
Texans migrated.
In
many parts of Texas, freedmen and women purchased land, or
"emancipation grounds," for Juneteenth gatherings. Examples
include: Emancipation Park in Houston, purchased in 1872; what is now
Booker T. Washington Park in Mexia; and Emancipation Park in Austin.
Celebration
of Juneteenth declined during World War II but returned in 1950 at
the Texas State Fair Grounds in Dallas. Interest and participation
fell away during the late 1950s and 1960s as attention focused on
expansion of freedom for African Americans. In the 1970s Juneteenth
revived in some communities. For example, in Austin the Juneteenth
celebration returned in 1976 after a 25-year hiatus. Texas House Bill
1016 passed in the 66th Legislature, Regular Session, declared June
19, "Emancipation Day in Texas," a legal state holiday
effective starting in 1980. Since that time, the celebration of
Juneteenth continues across the state of Texas with parades, picnics,
and dancing. Find out more at the Juneteenth article in the Handbook
of Texas from the Texas State Historical Association.
On
Thursday, June 17, 2021, after unanimous passage in the United States
Senate and subsequent passage in the House, President Biden signed a
bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Many states, including
Texas, have long recognized Juneteenth, but only some observe it as
an official holiday. This bill makes Juneteenth a national holiday.
Therefore,
as your Church Historian, by order of the Holy Spirit, I say Happy
Juneteenth to you and I solemnly urge you, my Sisters and my Brothers
to join in this postlude/afterword celebration of that which was
wrought by God’s Amazing Grace, the end to the “peculiar
institution” of slavery in these United States.
Let
us Celebrate on June 19th
and then resume our struggles on June 20th
to live in accordance to what is written in the Preamble to the U.S.
Constitution for all citizens…to “Secure the blessings of liberty
to ourselves and our posterity/our descendants.”

E A C E!

Today's Bible Study Lesson
“God’s
Restored People Shall Prosper”
Aim: Identify relationships
in which individuals or congregations have experienced God’s
restoration;
Find
comfort in the plans God has for their
lives;
and Proclaim
God’s justice and mercy for His people.
Background:
Isaiah 49:18-26
Bible Lesson:
Isaiah
49:18-23
“And
kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing
mothers: they shall bow down to thee with [their] face toward the
earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I
[am] the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.”
Isaiah 49:23 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
In the Book of Isaiah, the Prophet
writes about Israel’s Babylonian captivity. The people
suffer 70 years of oppression in Babylon before God allows a remnant
of the people of Israel to return to Jerusalem. In our Bible Study
today, God inspires Isaiah to record a prophesy of hope for a
restoration for the people of Judah. This
prophesy shows God’s magnanimous grace and forgiveness and His
ability to restore not only what was lost, but even more.
-
Isaiah
Isaiah 49:18-20, Promised Restoration:
Isaiah uses the imagery of a
mother or a widow who has lost her children in war to
either death or to
captivity in a foreign land. The people of Judah are depicted in
this imagery. The Babylonians took
men, women and children into captivity. The most devastating
aspect of such a situation
is
when children are
killed or separated from their parents in the tragedy of war. In
verse 18, the prophesy promises that
the mother’s children will be returned bringing
them unspeakable
joy. This promise is guaranteed by the Lord’s declarative words,
“As surely as I live.” The
joy brought
with
the return of the children rivals the breath
taking adornment of
a bride on
her wedding day. Next the imagery is
that of the destruction in
war that leaves cities devastated and abandoned, which
describes
Jerusalem after the Babylonians
captured
her people and took
them
into exile
in
Babylon. The promise here is that the people will once again reside
in Jerusalem with numbers
so great that they will
stress the available land leading
to a cry for expansion.
Also, the enemy, the Babylonians, will not be close by to plague
them anymore.
-
Isaiah
49:21, Questioning Restoration:
Verse
21, proclaims that the return of the people will be so surprising
that they will hardly be able to believe their circumstances of
restoration. The Lord’s
restoration exceeded what
was lost. The imagery of the woman whose children were lost is
picked up again. The people of Judah had lamented the loss of their
children and the loneliness
that accompanies loss, but now in restoration God’s
blessings of children is greater than
what they had before Babylonian exile. In their exuberance, they
questioned
where the children had come
from and who had
cared
for them. The answer is, from
the Lord Almighty, who provides every good and perfect gift for
us all.
-
Isaiah
49:22-23, Confirming Restoration and
Prosperity: In verse 22, God’s
Sovereignty is on display in that He uses a
godless pagan nation to
bless the people of Judah by
allowing them to return to Jerusalem, providing protection, and
financing the rebuilding of the Temple of God. God uses the Persian
ruler, Cyrus, after the Babylonians are overthrown to
effect such a blessing for the Babylonian exiles. The magnificent
power of God in His care
of
His people will result in the people of pagan nation seeking
to follow the God of Israel. They will be rewarded
for their trust and pursuit
of the Living God and will never regret
their decision to leave
their pagan gods for the One and Only True God of Israel.
Take
Aways:
-
God’s
restoration which includes rebuilding, repairing, and forgiving is
so magnificent that words are
insufficient
to describe.
-
God
has a plan for each of our lives. It behoves us to consult Him for
guidance and direction.
-
When
God brings
about
restoration,
we need to express our gratitude by publicly proclaiming His
goodness and mercy.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“For
I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts
of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah
29:11 KJV
“But
seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all
these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 KJV
“If
we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our]
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 KJV
“He
hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to
our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, [so] great
is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from
the west, [so] far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like
as a father pitieth [his] children, [so] the LORD pitieth them that
fear him.” Psa lms103:10-13 KJV
“But
as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have
entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for
them that love him.” 1 Corinthians
2:9 KJV
“For
thou, Lord, [art] good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy
unto all them that call upon thee.” Psalms
86:5 KJV
