Abortion access in America has become a patchwork of state-by-state policies. More than a dozen states have enacted sweeping bans on abortion, while several more aim to take similar actions when state legislatures reconvene this year.
1 in 3 people in the US has lost access to abortion in their state.
These bans don’t prevent all abortions. What they do is simply put safe, necessary medical care out of reach, specifically for our lowest-income sisters, queer, trans, & non-binary siblings, Black, brown, AAPI, & Indigenous people.
When performed by a trained provider, abortion is an overwhelmingly safe medical procedure. Unfortunately, almost half of all abortions take place in unsafe conditions, resulting in around 23,000 preventable pregnancy-related deaths every year.
Instead of criminalizing health care, interfering with personal decisions, and substituting political agendas for the expertise of health care professionals, our politicians should be doing everything they can to:
- ensure people can have healthy pregnancies and healthy deliveries
- ensure that people can raise their families in safe communities without fear of violence, without wanting for food or shelter, and access to childcare, jobs, & education.
