Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Spiritual
Blessings in Jesus Christ”
Aim:
UnderstandPaul’s explanation of being adopted by God through Jesus Christ;
Express
humility at God’s affirmation of our worthiness; and
PraiseGod for the remarkable gift of His adoption of us through Jesus Christ.
Background:
Ephesians
1
Bible
Lesson:
Ephesians
1:3-14
“Having
predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to
himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of
the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the
beloved.”
Ephesians
1:5-6 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Book of Ephesians
was
a letter written by Paul
during his imprisonment. Scholars believe that it was intended
for a wider readership than that
of the church at Ephesus
and it was
circulated among many churches in the Roman province. This
lesson discusses the Spiritual Blessings that come from our
acceptance and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
-
Ephesians
1:3-6,
God
Blessed Us:
Paul
opens his letter to the Ephesian church with praise to God for His
spiritual blessings brought about through
their uniting with Jesus Christ. God ‘s
love for His children and our election was in
God’s thoughts
even before He
created the world.
God’s love for
us through Christ Jesus,
provided our
holiness
and blemish
free existence before God. With great pleasure, God decided to adopt
us into His family by drawing us to Him through Jesus Christ. This
was not due to any worthiness on our part. It was purely God’s
advance decision. Our
praise to
God comes from His glorious grace, unmerited favor, poured out on us
because we belong to His Son, Jesus the Christ.
- Ephesians
1:7-12,
Jesus
Christ Redeemed:
God
through
His richness in grace and kindness purchased our freedom from sin
with the blood shed by His Son, Jesus the Christ. And furthermore,
God forgives
our
sins. He not only generously showers
us with His kindness, but He offers
us His
wisdom and understanding. God reveals
to us His Divine
plan,
in His own time and
brings
everything and everybody under the authority of Jesus Christ whether
it is in heaven or in
earth. Because we
are united with Christ we have received an inheritance from God and
he chose us in advance and orchestrates everything to work according
to His plan. God’s plan was for the Jews to trust in Jesus Christ
first
and to bring
praise and glory to God as
other nations sought the
Jews’ true and living God..
-
Ephesians
1:13-14,
The
Holy Spirit Sealed Our Salvations:
Because
many of the Jews rejected the Good News, the Gospel was shared with
the Gentiles who
accepted the Good News which provided
to them
salvation. Their
belief and acceptance of Jesus Christ allowed them to receive the
Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus before His return to Glory. The
Holy Spirit is God’s guarantee that we will receive the
inheritance that was promised and
for
which
Christ
has purchased for
us,
His people through
the shedding of His Blood on Calvary.
In
light of this
divine gift, we
should give God praise and desire to glorify His name!
Take
Aways:
-
Christians
are the recipients of Spiritual Blessings with the foremost
blessings
being
forgiveness
of sins
and salvation.
-
The
presence of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life is a guarantee
of Christ’s
presence
in our lives and of the fulfillment of God’s Promises.
-
Christians
have dual citizenship, of this world and of a city not made with
human hands
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“The
LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon
thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance
upon thee, and give thee peace.” Numbers
6:24-26 KJV
“By
faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he
should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not
knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of
promise, as [in] a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with
Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he
looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker
[is] God.” Hebrews
11:8-10
KJV
“[Let
us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our
hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with
pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of [our] faith without
wavering; (for he [is] faithful that promised;)” Hebrews
10:22-23 KJV
“He
staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong
in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what
he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was
imputed to him for righteousness.” Romans
4:20-22 KJV
“Looking
unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy
that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and
is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews
12:2 KJV
