Verified by GS1 is a global solution making it possible for brand-owners to share data about their products so that retailers can verify the identity of the products they sell. Verified by GS1 is like an ID card containing key attributes of a product which will be stored in a single, trusted, database of information hosted by GS1 (the GS1 Registry Platform), and will be easily accessible to retailers, globally.

What is UDI?

A UDI is a series of numeric or alphanumeric characters that is created through a globally accepted device identification and coding standard. It allows the unambiguous identification of a specific medical device on the market. The UDI is comprised of the UDI-DI and UDI-PI. The unique identifier may include information on the lot or serial number, and be able to be applied anywhere in the world.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Commission and other regulators have made patient safety a strategic priority by developing UDI regulations for Medical Devices and In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) Devices and are aiming for a globally harmonised and consistent approach aligned on the IMDRF Guidelines.

How GS1 Standards can be used for UDI?

GS1 is accredited as an UDI Issuing Agency/Entity based on many regulations worldwide, in particular US, EU, China, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, meaning that manufacturers supplying regulated medical devices to these markets can use the GS1 standards to implement the UDI requirements. In Singapore, Health Science Authority (HSA) has also announced its plan to implement UDI system. For more details, please refer to www.hsa.gov.sg
