I first read Atomic Habits in 2018.
Since then I’ve been able to build and break many habits.
In particular, a habit of summarising books.
What few realise, is the ideas can be applied to build better organisations.
Every leader wants a better culture.
To change a culture you need to change behaviours.
You need to build and break habits in the workplace.
James Clear teaches the 4 laws of behaviour change:
- Make it Obvious.
- Make it Attractive.
- Make it Easy.
- Make it Satisfying.
Here is an example.
I worked with a leader who wanted to “listen better”.
We used the 4 laws to design the change:
- Place a post-it note on the monitor (Obvious)
- Included this in their qrtly performance objectives (Attractive)
- Focused on a specific part of listening, summarising.
- Made it challenging by asking for regular feedback.
