Dear Community,
What a roller coaster ride of a summer it has been. Through all the up and downs of the COVID pandemic, SIL has been strong and steadfast, continuing to provide quality services to every person and every community we serve. We remain open and flexible to our clients needs and schedules, but most significantly, we have worked diligently to provide support to those experiencing anxiety and fear regarding the state of Ohio and the World.
As we continue to forge ahead, we have seen an overwhelming number of requests for our virtual cooking class, S.P.I.C.E., and we continue to “think outside the box” to provide our services in a healthy and safe environment. For anyone needing assistance with technology, please don’t hesitate to call us. We are here to provide the help needed to ensure you don’t miss out on any of our fantastic virtual events, webinars, and trainings.
I’d like to remind everyone that SIL is here to help when it comes to scheduling vaccination appointments, setting reminders for upcoming appointments, and getting to/from those appointments. If you need any assistance with these things – GIVE US A CALL!
And finally, thank you to all who supported SIL with our first online raffle fundraiser. It was a success and lots of fun! Congratulations to all the winners and to all the individuals and businesses who donated the raffle items, we appreciate you! We wouldn’t have been successful without everyone involved.
As we see the leaves change colors, earlier sunsets and feel cooler weather, please continue to keep SIL is the front of your mind when it comes to disability related issues and events. Summer may have left us, but SIL is here for the long haul!
And remember, we are in it with you!

“Our national recovery from the pandemic cannot be completed without the inclusion of all Americans, in particular people with disabilities,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. “Their contributions have historically been vital to our nation’s success, and are more important today than ever. We must build an economy that fully includes the talent and drive of those with disabilities.”

The Business Case for Disability Inclusion Wednesday, October 6th - 10:00am - 11:00am
Join
SIL along with Jared Daly, Regional Coordinator of Workforce
Development, Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities, for an
in depth discussion on why having a diversified workforce is key to
inclusion, profitability and success. Employers are recognizing that
individuals with disabilities can be productive and integral employees,
and seeing this success first hand. Some of the top businesses in the
U.S. have seen their efforts to hire people with disabilities lead to
higher revenue and better profit margins. The business case for hiring
people with disabilities is clear and shows disability inclusion is a
smart business decision. Attend this session to hear about the top
reasons employees with disabilities positively add to local and national
work forces. Also, attend to learn best practices on how to recruit,
train and retain candidates with disabilities so that your business or
organization too can benefit from this untapped workforce.

Northeast Ohio Direct Care Crisis Workforce Virtual Force |
|
|
|
|
It
is no surprise to people who utilize home care services either through a
Medicaid Waiver, a Developmental Disabilities Waiver, MyCare Ohio, the
PCA Program, or another funding source that there is a crisis
surrounding the providers. There are many problems including provider
shortages, poor retention rate, difficulty in becoming a provider, and
additional requirements of providers that make the profession
unattractive. However, there are numerous of us with significant
disabilities that rely on providers of direct care for vital, life
sustaining activities such as getting in and out of bed, bathing,
eating, and assistance with toileting.
In conjunction with the Ohio Olmstead Taskforce, SIL is hosting a Northeast Ohio Direct Care Workforce Crisis Virtual Forum on Thursday, October 28th, 2021 from 3:00-4:00.
We are inviting State Representatives and the media to join to learn
about the issues we are facing as recipients of direct care as well as
the provider’s point of view. There will be a panel of consumers and a
provider who will share their stories.
Please mark your calendars and watch for details about
the forum. For more information, please contact Lisa Marn by phone at 216.389.0379 or by Email at lmarn@sil-oh.org.
