Throughout this month of July we’re looking at scriptures on freedom and the incredible gift given to believers as Christ made us free!

Isaiah 61:1 reminds us, “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,”

Through Christ, we have..,

1. Freedom to approach God. Hebrews 10:19 states, “Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,”
   
   
2. Freedom to relate to God as His child and His heir. Galatians 4:7 says, “Therefore, you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ”.
   
   
3. Freedom to partake and enjoy every spiritual blessing. Ephesians 1:3 rejoices, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ”.
   
   
4. Freedom to bring our concerns and requests to God. Philippians 4:6 teaches us to “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God”.

To God Be The Glory for freedom, which is one of the most sought after and cherished things in the world. May we forever be grateful for the gift of everlasting spiritual freedom given by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to all who truly believe!

As we continue our study of Timothy from "Great Characters of the Bible," the Youth are learning, like Timothy, the importance of building a strong faith in Christ and learning and understanding scripture at a young age. With his commitment to spreading the gospel, Timothy was able to bring so many to Christ. With 11 Youth in attendance this past Wednesday, including one of our newest members, Bro. Roman White, and a "friend" of one of our Youth, we will continue to follow Timothy's example of talking about the goodness of God's Word and encourage other Youth to join us! As we complete our study of Timothy within the next couple of weeks, we will move on to our next character, Paul, Timothy's mentor.

The Youth Ministry meets every 2nd Wednesday In-Person and every 4th Wednesday via Zoom (Meeting ID: 867 3355 4109) at 7:00 pm. Also please check your GroupMe for our weekly updates and reminders!

Name: Anna M. Tatman

Current Focus: Salvation is on my mind! GOD has blessed me with 3 adult sons, 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. I want my family who have been baptized to grow closer to GOD. I want family who don’t know JESUS to get to know HIM and to accept HIS gift of salvation. I want these things for my family, for your family, for all families.

When I ushered, I liked helping people find a seat where they could comfortably hear the WORD of GOD. It made me happy to see them settle in for worship. That’s my focus. I want us to be saved, to settle in and to worship HIM.

Career: I retired from Fayette County Public Schools. FCPS was one of the many jobs I had. All of my jobs were “people jobs”.

Why this Career?: I really like helping people. I also like to talk with people. I find people interesting. So, in every job, I talked with people, and I helped them. I’ll share just a few of my jobs. I worked for the Urban League and Community Action in both of their early years. I was also an Encyclopedia Brittanica liaison for school districts in 9 counties. I was the coordinator for Operation Read and a recruiter for a foster grandparent program. I’ve done lots of things. I even trained for two weeks in St. Thomas to manage a store there.

What do you want your church family to know about you?: I really like to have fun. I want to have a good time. I was part of the Red Hatters Society because it was fun!

I am 88 years old. I was born April 18, 1937. I have lived in a few cities including St. Louis and Louisville. Lexington is home! Lexington’s growth has been one of the biggest changes that I’ve seen and I have seen a lot.

I went to school in Pricetown. I started Douglas in the 5^th grade. You stayed at Douglass from the 5^th to the 12^th grade. We really became a family! I was a cheerleader for the 1956 Douglass Basketball Ball Championship team. We (team and cheerleaders) were in the first class of inductees for the Lexington African American Sports Hall of Fame! What memories we shared that evening.

Another unforgettable memory is when I was a student at Virginia Union University. It’s a private, Baptist HBCU. I had saved $8 for a concert ticket. (I think it was for the Platters). I was excited about going. Students had to have permission to leave the campus to attend. The administration changed their minds and said we couldn’t go. No concert for us! Students were not to leave campus. They wanted us in the gymnasium to hear some man. Students were rowdy. I was mad. It had taken me months to save the $8 and suddenly, I was expected to listen to someone I didn’t know instead seeing The Platters! The speaker kept trying to get our attention. When he said, “Please, I need your help,” there was a hush. Instantly! There was something in his voice. We sat quietly as he explained why he needed our help as fundraisers and the importance of our joining him at a March in Richmond. We all got up and followed him out. All of us. No discussion. No debate. We felt the moment! The speaker was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His wife, Corretta, was with him. She was pregnant with their second child. I can still see her holding their oldest son’s hand. They walked out and we all followed them.

$8 was a big sacrifice at that time. But, like today, you save money to have a good time with family and friends. As a young person, I always had a good time at The Lyric. I was a regular at the weekend shows. We could watch black and white picture shows all day for 10 cents. The Cowboys were my favorite. I remember Roy Rogers and his wife, Dale Evans. There was also Tom Nix and Gene Autry. Their adventures were exciting.

I like adventure. A cherished adventure is my trip to Alaska! It was a 29-day trip there and back with stops. I helped drive the RV! My uncles started teaching me how to drive when I was 12. I got my license at 23 and I was learning how to drive a RV with an attached Jeep at 76! You’re never too old to learn! The trip was a great time. I saw so much.

I have seen Geronimo’s grave. I have sifted for gold. I have seen the beautiful landscape across the country. I’ve seen a lot and there’s still more to see. I remember when you attached a colored piece of plastic (green on one side and red on another) over the television to have color TV. Look at us now!

As we see more and do more, we must give more. That’s why I’m part of the 40 Yr Christians and the Missionaries. It’s also why I still stay on the Usher Board. I can’t do what I used to do but I can still do something. We all can!

One thing I hope we can do together is transportation for our youth. Oh, how I loved driving the church van. I was so happy when it was filled with young children on their way to Bible based programs! Youth programs are so important. What I learned as a student at Douglass gave me a foundation that I stood on when attending Virginia Union, UK, Spenserian and Fugazzi. Those schools helped us get jobs. Church programs help us get through adversity on our jobs. They got us from a good life to an eternal one. I can’t drive the church van anymore but someone can.

Is there anything special your church can do for you? GOD is LOVE. Let’s be a loving church. Let’s take time to know about each other. That’s why I agreed to be the Spotlight when asked. Spotlight lets us know new things about each. It can help us start a conversation.

And that’s what you can do for me! Look at using the van and start a conversation. Talk with someone who is not in your circle. Branch out and meet others. If talking to a member, find out what they do and learn how their life is impacted by being at the church. If they are a visitor, introduce yourself and learn about them. Don’t pressure them but help make them feel welcome. That’s what drew me to Pleasant Green. I felt welcomed. There was such warmth! That warmth was love.

What do you want your church family to know about GOD?: Our GOD is an awesome GOD! GOD answers prayers. Pray! As long as we are a praying family, a praying people, a praying church, GOD will give us the power to overcome all obstacles in HIS time!

Hope For Mental Health

Mental illness brings shame and we think Jesus is ashamed of us too, He is NOT!

Our minds love to remind us of the past. We find ourselves looking back and focusing on our mistakes. As christians , we are challenged to look to what Christ has already done. When we see our scars, we need not be cast down because Christ has taken upon Himself the hurt, shame, pain, guilt, and sin. The power of the enemy holds no power over us because of the Precious Blood of the Lamb. We are redeemed by His overcoming power. Choose to see His scars that brings us life.

FLU

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.

COVID-19

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.

The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
