The crew aboard the Egypt-flagged Bulk Carrier WADI FERAN (IMO: 9460083) underway in the Phillip Channel, Singapore Strait, reported that five perpetrators armed with knives and gun-like objects boarded the vessel.
The perpetrators were sighted in the Engine Room of the vessel. The ship's general alarm was raised, and the crew mustered. A thorough search was conducted, and all crew members were accounted for with no injuries reported. Some ship's stores were reportedly stolen.
The Master of the WADI FERAN reported the incident to the Singapore Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS), and a safety navigational broadcast was initiated. Upon arrival at the anchorage, the Singapore Police Coast Guard (PCG) boarded the vessel and completed a search, finding no perpetrators. The Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) Maritime Security Task Force (MSTF) was also notified, and information about the incident was shared with Indonesian and Malaysian authorities.
There have been at least ten similar incidents reported this year in this area. In 2023 at least 67 incidents occurred within, or near, the Singapore & Malacca Straits; most in the vicinity of Phillip Channel.
