First, many thanks to all 284 of you who signed our online petition. Thank you also to everyone who wrote personal letters to the City of Eagle River. The petition and signatures and all your letters and a very well done report prepared by City Administrator Robin Ginner were all in the packets of Eagle River council members for their meeting on June 13.
While most of the meeting went well, a grandstanding speech by one council member misled his colleagues into voting for a motion that hobbles the River Trail project. The vote was to remain part of the River Trail Commission, but only if the trail doesn't extend east of the STH 17-70 intersection. That cuts out the easternmost 2 miles of the trail - the part connecting to Eagle River itself. As I said, it severely hobbles the project, but only temporarily we hope.
The River Trail Commission and GHT meet next Thursday, July 20 to discuss the situation.
The Eagle River City Council meets again on Aug. 8, 2023.
Between now and then:
1. Please take the Alternative Transportation Plan survey RIGHT AWAY!
2. Write to the Eagle River City Council to respectfully point out that they need to rescind the motion that curtails the River Trail route. Be sure to explain who you are. And explain why you or others you know would value a safe off-road path on which to walk or bike in the STH 70 corridor all along the way between St. Germain and Eagle River. Please copy us on your messages. Click HERE for contact info for the council members.
