“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”
-Audrey Hepburn
Last week we talked about purchasing fresh produce, and what better way to access fresh, organic produce with zero packaging than to grow your own? This week’s tip is to plant a garden and grow your own food.
Depending upon where you live, it may be a little early in the season for you to start planting, but it doesn’t hurt to plan so that you will be ready when it is time to plant.
Home gardens are extremely rewarding. Nothing tastes better than fresh fruits or veggies straight from your garden. In addition, growing your own food reduces your grocery bills and you get to control exactly how it is grown (pesticide free!).
A few preliminary tips to start your own home garden:
- Pick a sunny location for a vegetable garden.
- Start small and add to it after you get the hang of it.
- Start with some easy vegetables (this piece gives some great suggestions).
If you do not have a yard, but still want a garden to tend to and reap the benefits from, consider a community garden in your neighborhood. A community garden is a shared space in a community where the participants share the maintenance and products of the garden while simultaneously beautifying a lot.
Or some other great options include growing an herb garden in the windowsill of your kitchen; growing potted vegetables and fruits on a balcony; or purchasing an indoor garden kit.
Here are some more tips for growing the perfect vegetable garden, but the most important thing to remember are Janet Kilburn Phillips’s words, “There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments.”
