"If [there be] therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, [being] of one accord, of one mind."
Philippians 2:1-2 KJV

As our
celebration of Women’s History month continues this morning, we
look at women who have have broken barriers, fought for causes, and
become a significant part of history while working and worshiping
right here at our own Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist
Church.
Sister Julia Lewis was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Lexington
and was a key leader in the Kentucky Congress of Racial
Equality. She was a registered nurse by profession and gifted
speaker
Dr. A. Celeste Shelton-Harris, is a distinguished educator and former
principal. A true leader and trailblazer, she started out as one of
the first black television “Weather Girls,” at WKYTV Channel 27 in Lexington and went
on to become a producer, newscaster and TV anchor.
Sister Kimberly Henderson Baird, Esq began her career as an Assistant
Commonwealth’s Attorney in 1996. In 2022, she made history by
becoming the first African American female in Kentucky to serve in
the role of Fayette Commonwealth’s Attorney.
Sister Viola Davis Brown was the first African American admitted to a
nursing school in 1955 in Lexington. Her promotion in 1960 to
hospital supervisor at Saint Joseph Hospital was another first for African Americans in
Lexington in 1972. Sister Brown was one the first two Nurse Practioner licensuers in Lexington, KY in 1980. The former and late Governor John Y. Brown, Jr. appointed Sister Brown to the position of Director of Public Health in Nursing, a post which she held for 19 years. In 2004, Sister Brown was inducted into the University of Kentucky College of Health Hall of Fame.
Doctor Doris Wilkinson is one of the University of Kentucky’s first
three African-American graduates. In 1958 she became the University’s first full-time African-American faculty member, a
pioneer and role model for the University and the Commonwealth. She
is the founder and first director of the African-American Studies and
Research Program at UK and creator of the African-American History
Trail in Lexington. She established the Forum for Black Faculty, the
Carter Godwin Woodson Lecture Series, and the Black Women’s Conference.
As an educator, researcher and author, Wilkinson contributed
significantly to the study of sociology, including articles and books
on social theory, race, class and gender.
To
God Be The Glory for these beautiful, trailblazing women who have
shaped our lives and who have become a significant part of
history, while praising our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, right
here at Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church.

The OOAL Book Club
“Out on a Limb” is the name of the church book clubThat was formed in 2010 by members Michele Thomas , Nieta Wigginton and the late pastor Rev. Dr. T.H. Peoples, Jr. The name of the club has so much symbolism in it. When we think about the caterpillar that crawls to the weakest limb, having faith that the limb will support its weight, in order to weave and hang its cocoon where it will then transform into a beautiful butterfly. This now butterfly spreads its wings and steps out on faith to soar high about the ground. Our book club represents life and its changes/ transformations through the support of the church, community and its members. We strive to explore the various writings and cultures of many diverse authors and continue to learn the history of our African American race.
OOAL is fun, with great fellowship through reading as well as sharing in the bond of Christian love and salvation!
As of this year, we have read 116 books and have hosted several well known authors through our zoom sessions.
We have been blessed to attended 4 National Book Club Conference in Atlanta, GA. We have received two awards for “Outstanding Book Club”
OOAL meets the 4th Saturday of each month by Zoom.
If you are interested in joining the book club, please contact Michele Thomas (859) 351-4663 Alyce Emerson (859) 552-6469

FLU
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.
RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.
RSV shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a RSV vaccination.
COVID-19
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.
The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
Both COVID vaccines and Booster COVID vaccines are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding COVID vaccinations.
