Merriest of holidays, you glorious creatures! Whatever you celebrate, I hope it’s a joyous and peaceful holiday. We do Christmas in my neck of the woods, with a wonderfully pagan tradition on Christmas Eve, the lighting of bayberry candles to remember those who can’t be with us, on this plane, and the next. The youngest lights the candles at sunset, and they burn through the night. It’s bad luck to blow them out, so one of us always takes them to bed and stays up until they burn out themselves. Or, if we’re too tired, they go into the bathtub. Isn’t it funny how superstitious we get around the holidays?
We got the house decorated early, and the cards out, and I’ll have the out of town gifts mailed by the weekend. So I’m about a week ahead of schedule, and that feels good. All the deadlines for the year have been met, my alter ego just turned in an odd little story to an anthology that will be out next holiday season, and so it’s time to snuggle in, stay warm, and read good books. I’ve been saving Divine Rivals–will I love it? Everyone says so.
I’ve also started work on the next Jayne novel, THE BOOK OF SPIRITS, which is going to knock your socks off. No release date yet, but I think spring 2024 is doable. That’s the goal, anyway. So far, THE PROPHECY OF WIND is going gangbusters. Do me a favor: if you’ve read and enjoyed it, please pop over to Amazon and Goodreads and give it a rating, or even a review!
Speaking of...as a holiday special, there will be lots of freebies over the next few weeks, from Jayne short stories to a couple of the earlier books in the series. Be on the lookout on the socials.
And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Alisha Klapheke has a new one out, THE PIRATE KING’S THIEF. We had a fun Facebook party to launch it into being, and it’s always so great to see her thriving. Alisha helped create our favorite green river of stars, the Torrent, and our favorite CIA Librarian, so whenever we can cheer her on, we shall!
One last thing. My alter ego has started a writing series on Substack to chronicle the 22 Steps of writing a novel, using a new standalone thriller as an example. You can see more about that here.
Merry Everything to you and yours! See you in the new year.
