The Dogs Made It!

Dear Friends and Supporters, we have made some significant achievements last month especially on research and rescue.

Our team is collaborating with University of Washington and other partners to carry the quest of finding pangolins using trained dogs. The dogs are supposed to sniff for the pangolin scats in the wild and from that we can develop a genetic map for both both Chinese and Sunda pangolins.

We found the pangolins!

It was too good to be true: the dogs detected not only the scats but also the pangolins.

For each fecal sample found, our team will record the information of age, exposure and other contents like GPS location, weather, elevation. These will help aid DNA extraction and draw a clearer picture of pangolin habitat in wildlife.

My heart will go on...

...with 93 pangolins

Nearly a month after being rescued and taken care in our center, 93 pangolins fully recovered.

The release started in the end of April, divided into two trips because of the big number we need to transport this time. And this is always the best part of our job: seeing the pangolins climbing out of the box, sniffing around, slowly getting to know the area and dissolving themselves into the vast rain forest.

The Crab-eating Mongoose was sent to our center with a deep cut in his paws. Our vet and volunteers had a really hard time taking care of him last month since this species is very aggressive and the pain even made him angrier.

Changing the bandages every three days, cleaning the wound, applying foam and providing him the most peaceful environment to recover were all we did last month. He made some major improvements ever since.

On our road trip to release the pangolins, we also had a chance to help a pypmy loris from a confiscate trade in Nha Trang.

The fast pace of rescuing and releasing put pressure not only on our capacity but also in our finance situation. Give us a hand!

Our Kids Project getting more attendtions

As the number of trips get bigger, we received more and more attentions from the public and media. On April, our team debuted on three big national channels like VTC and also local papers.

Moreover, it was the butterfly season in Cuc Phuong and the kids really enjoyed playing with the beautiful scene here. Did we tell you that April was such a great month?

Kim learned to eat

Growing up in the love of our staff and supporters all over the world, Kim just had another amazing month of her life. She got bigger, her scales grew harder and darker everyday. 

We also started adding ants in to the food, slow cut milk from her diet. She is about to have her own encloures very soon.

Another foward step in advocacy

It is time to review the list of species in Decrees 160/ND-CP. Base on criteria to determine species and the regime to manage species under the list of endangered, precious and rare species prioritized for protection, our team reviewed and created the proposals for 20 species of carnivores and pangolins. We also sent the requests to Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment to maintain 17 species of carnivores and pangolins in the list, and suggested to add three new species of carnivores including Owston’s civet, Large spotted civet, and Spotted linsang in the list of species in Decree 160. It means to maintain or increase the attention and punishment for any the illegal hunting, trading and consumption of those 20 species.

Welcome Maddie to the pack

Last month, we had Madelon Rusman (aka Maddie) join us as our new technical advisor. We welcome her by the biggest recuse ever with 113 pangolins and days of hard working after that. What a start!

Maddie worked as mammal keeper for Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust from 2013 and her experience in capacity building, animal husbandry and welfare issues would bring new spirit to our team.

Some help from all over the world

On April, we also welcomed seven volunteers from US, UK, Australia and Vietnam and received enormous help from them. Take care of the rescued pangolins, feed the binturongs and civets, help upgrading enrichment to our current enclosures... you name it.

Life some how get much more easier if you have friends like these coming every month.

Stunning new designs

Last month, we were honor to have Julie Pretot and Antho Sautet - two professional volunteers from Frace - coming to help re-design our merchandise items and some other training materials for our Education Our reach team.

Everyone immediately fell in love with the new design and really can not wait to get hands on the final products.
