Good Sunday morning, everyone!
A little motivational commentary for you today, as audition season approaches (it's already here, actually.) I know most of you reading this are NOT actively planning your summer program audition schedule, but even if you've never been to a dance audition in your life and don't plan to start now, I suspect this topic will trigger a familiar feeling.
I had a piece published last week called "Overcoming Feelings of Intimidation at Summer Program Auditions," and it is about exactly that: facing the fear or sense of being "lesser-than" in an audition setting-- but really, this applies to any situation where you find yourself being assessed alongside others, whether or not all the hopefuls are actually being measured against each other or not (usually not, which is where our minds often lead us emotionally astray.)
I spoke with three sources for this article, each of them offering practical and inspirational advice on how to prep for and handle these situations. Below are some of their quotes that struck me the most and seemed especially wise.
Have a good week, everyone, and remember that as Lindy Mandrajeff said, instead of withering in the face of talent that's greater than yours, make it motivate you. "Don't let it make you feel like you're not going to make it just because there's one other good dancer. There's space in the dance world for all of us."
