From the PPA

STEPHEN HAYWARD, Pedal Power Association Chairman

It is with gratitude that we welcome you to the 28th Pedal Power Association Double Century. Through many hours of work and negotiation, the CTCTT and PPA teams were successful in persuading the authorities that we can manage to stage an event that complies with all the safety protocols. We are grateful to the Swellendam Municipality and the local SAPS for their support in getting the PPA Double Century approved.

A number of changes have had to be introduced this year to comply with regulations. The great number of spectators at the start, along the route and at the finish will not be there to cheer you on but be assured that as the gun goes off your supporters will be there in spirit with you.

We wish all participants a safe, successful and enjoyable ride.

From the Mayor of Swellendam

NICHOLAS MYBURGH , Executive Mayor

Swellendam, a warm and hospitable town steeped in beauty and history, is proud to play host to one of the most prestigious biking events of the Western Cape.

We extend our warmest welcome to all PPA Double Century (PPADC) participants and support teams.  May your time in Swellendam be an unforgettable experience, make the most of our charming surrounds, and bask in the beauty that is Swellendam.

Many congratulations to David Bellairs and his outstanding team for an excellent event. Good luck to each and every one, enjoy the race, be safe, and come back soon!

From Western Cape Government

It is my pleasure to welcome all of the riders participating in the 2020 edition of the Double Century to the Western Cape. This event takes place at a time when we are all coming to grips with the new normal and I am pleased that this iconic race will still go ahead, albeit with some changes to the way things are normally done.

Your participation in this race, and your presence in Swellendam supports the tourism industry and the many people it employs, which has been hard hit by the pandemic.

My call therefore is for all riders to support a small or local business during your visit-even if it's just for a cup of coffee or a post-race meal.

I would like to extend my thanks to the race organisers for putting safety measures in place to help keep us safe, while still enjoying this incredible race.

I appeal to everyone to abide by these safety measures, and to stick to the golden rules of mask wearing, social distancing and hygiene during your stay.

I wish you all a safe and successful race.

Everything you need to know for your 202km circumnavigation of the Overberg, Klein Karoo and Breede River Valley.

• All additions or changes to the team must now be done at registration. The individual collecting the race packs on behalf of the team, must have details of the cyclist/cyclists that are being added or substituted. A penalty fee of R200 will be incurred per addition or change, and is payable only at registration.

• If the correct procedure is not adhered to and a team member is found to be riding without completing a valid substitution, the entire team will be disqualified.

Race Day timing and your RaceTec chip

Timing will be done by RaceTec. It is compulsory for all team members to wear a RaceTec chip. You may not use someone else’s chip and you shall not ride with another cyclist’s race number without adhering to the substitution procedure. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in the disqualification of the team. You may purchase a timing chip at registration or in the start chutes from RaceTec representatives for R150 each. Teams will be checked in the lineup to the start. Teams will not be allowed to start without all their team members wearing timing chips.

Without these five things, you will not be able to start the PPA Double Century.

Your mask
To be worn in order to access the start area and venue. This may be removed while riding.

Your RaceTec (or Winning Time) timing chip
To be worn on your ankle (with a Velcro strap) or on the special front wheel quick-release mount, pointing towards the ground.

Race Day Emergency Number: 087 820 5605
Please save this number in your phone in case of an emergency.

Live race briefing
To ensure you know everything there is to know about the PPA Double Century and are 100% race day ready, make sure you watch the live race briefing taking place on Tuesday 10 November at 18:00. If you are unable to watch it live, the recording will be available afterwards. Watch it live on the Double Century Facebook page.

Bike shop
There will be a pop-up bike shop at the Swellendam Show Grounds during registration on Friday, 20 November, and on the morning of the event for any last-minute spares you may need. Additionally, there will be a mechanic on site too.

On-route bike mechanics
There will be bike mechanics on the first half of the PPA DC route that will be able to provide only basic mechanical assistance to cyclists who are not being supported by their team support vehicles. On the second half of the route, from Ashton onwards, cyclists will need to be self-sufficient or supported by their team support vehicles.

• A new start protocol will be implemented to adhere to social distancing, and all riders will be temperature checked and screened before entering the start area.

• Riders will access the venue via the Station Street gate only. View map here.

• Teams will need to arrive no more than 20 minutes and no less than 10 minutes before their allocated start time in order to complete Covid-19 protocol checks but at the same time to ensure maximum social distancing.

VERY IMPORTANT! No spectators are allowed at the start. Only riders will be allowed into the start venue where there will be toilet facilities for riders to use.

All teams will be seeded in conventional “fastest first” order unlike in previous years. This is to ensure maximum social distancing on the road, at Team Support Zones and at the finish. Teams are seeded on previous Double Century history, as well through RaceTec’s general seeding system, and it is done on the fastest four members of the team, not just the captain’s performances.

Team start times will be released shortly, you will be able to find them here.

New rules for support vehicles

Please ensure that you familiarize yourself with the new rules for team support vehicles. There will be no event-supplied feed stations on the route so teams will need to be self-sufficient. Only ONE team vehicle will be allowed to support each team this year. Team vehicles will receive one set of accreditation which covers both Team Support Zones. The Ashton Team Support Zone (neutral zone) and the Bonnievale Team Support Zone (no longer a neutral zone) are the only sections on the route that a team support vehicle will be able to feed their team.

No spectators are allowed in the Team Support Zones or to follow teams and support them along the route.

(You can check out the full road closures by clicking on the road closures block below.)

Cyclists are required to reach the PPA Double Century finish line in Swellendam by 18:00. Cut-offs will also be implemented along the route. A sweep vehicle will indicate the rolling closure of the course. The rolling road closure is calculated from the time the last team crosses the start line.

• Drew Refreshment Station: 16:30

• Cyclists unable to complete the race on the first half of the route should call the VOC to report that they need a sweep vehicle which will transport them to the Swellendam Show Grounds. Please note that this will not be a quick process, as the sweep vehicles will not come directly to you, but will pick you up as they patrol the route and collect other stricken riders. Find a shady spot and relax while you wait, and cheer on the brave souls still soldiering on.

• Cyclists unable to continue the race from the first team support zone (Ashton) onwards, should board their own team support vehicle.

Rules of the road

All cyclists must obey the instructions of the marshals on the ground and on motorbikes. If you see or hear a marshal with a whistle, please be advised that a danger zone is approaching. Please immediately exercise caution!

As this event does not have complete road closure, cyclists must keep to the left of the centre white line at all times and allow vehicles to overtake. Failure to comply with this rule could lead to disqualification of the entire team.

No littering allowed!

Cyclists and support crew shall not dispose of any litter along the PPA Double Century route except in the refuse bins provided. Penalties for littering range from a fine to disqualification.

Drone usage

NO unauthorized drones may be used at the event.
• If teams make use of their own photographers, they must be cleared by the event organisers.

The finish

This is located in Van Eeden Street in Swellendam. Please note that there will be no hospitality area or prize giving ceremony at the Swellendam Show Grounds post event.

There will be a PPA Double Century photo wall at the finish area in Van Eeden Street, where Action Photo will be set up to take a socially-distanced photo of your team to commemorate the day. Photos taken by Action Photo on the day will also be available to buy online.

Finisher medals and Charles Milner medals must be collected immediately after the finish line (before the photo wall).  All 10 finishers need to present themselves together immediately after finishing to get the Charles Milner medal.

Celebrate the end of the 2020 PPA Double Century with a hearty food hamper compliments of Food Lover’s Market. Each food hamper contains braai meat (Halaal option available), a braai sauce, rolls, crisps, salad, salad dressing as well as snacks and mixed nuts for the whole team to enjoy!

Your team support vehicle will collect the food hamper for the team from the Swellendam Show Grounds.

Results will be available on RaceTec at www.racetec.co.za from the evening after the event. Keep an eye on our social media platforms – we will post a notice as soon as the results are available.
