Our Weekly Parish Newsletter for Sunday, June 11 - The Solemnity of The Body and Blood of Christ |
|
|
|
"So Jesus said to them, 'Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in them.'"

Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, June 11 |
|
|
|
To the Parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints –
"Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
It was the tradition of the grandmother and grandfather of the family that each of their grandchildren would receive a BIBLE as they graduated from high school or had decided to “leave home’.
Bobby was a special grandchild to the grandparents. He was not very athletic, but he always gave his very best, to contribute in the sports events in which he participated. He struggled with academics, but always worked very hard to pass his exams and make the most of his studies.
Bobby was hoping to become a mechanic; he loved to work with motors or anything that required the use of tools … he worked best with his hands. The grandparents were looking to up-grade their car so had promised Bobby that he could purchase their “old car” as his graduation gift from high school. The deal was made!
As usual, Bobby received his Bible, as did all the other cousins. He was excited, knowing that his graduation gift would include his very own car – so when would he receive the keys? One week went by, then two – still no keys. Bobby didn’t want to appear unappreciative or disrespectful of his grandparent’s generosity … but a deal is a deal! When would he receive “his reward” for all the hard work of his high school years?
Bobby complained to Grandma, to share some of his frustration. Her advice: “What would the Lord say to you in this predicament? Maybe Jesus would have some guidance for you.” Bobby was not impressed with Grandma’s advice; the Bible was the same “gift” that all the other cousins received on their graduation. What made his “present” any different? In desperation he opened the Bible, hoping to seek some solution to his frustration and problem! When he opened the Bible, to his surprise … there were the keys to “his car”!
For many years after that, Bobby would tell this story to his kids and friends. He described the experience as one of his greatest “educational moments”! That, in times of struggle or frustration and indecision, even in times of anticipation of joy and delight … turn to the Lord! Bobby’s Bible had become his “play book” for life.
God is good … all the time!
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
God is good … all the time.
Fr. Mike Dechant OMI

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Hi Everyone!
June is off to a great start, with some nice rains and now some glorious, summer-like weather. With the recent rains, the fire bans have been lifted in many parts of the province, so that's great news for our campers - who doesn't love sitting around a lovely, crackling campfire - they are fun, functional, warm and mesmerizing - but we must ALWAYS do our part to be very careful and not do anything that could contribute to starting a wildfire. Enjoying the great outdoors is good for the body, mind and spirit, but we also need to be responsible, considerate and caring for all of God's incredible creation!
Now, let's see what's coming up in our Parish and around our Diocese for June and beyond:
- We need to say a big, heart-felt thank you and farewell to a staff member who wasn't with us for very long, but we sure appreciated her while she WAS here with us! All the details are directly below.
- Another HUGE thank-you - to all those who made our Parish BBQ last Sunday such an enjoyable, successful event! Please see more details below.
- Don't forget that our Knights of Columbus will be starting up their Hamburger and Hot Dog BBQ Fundraisers NEXT Saturday, June 17, over at Canadian Tire (Preston Crossing), and will have their second BBQ on Saturday June 24. The rest of the details are just below. Come on out!
- Due to Anastasia's departure, we are once again looking for a part-time Administrative Assistant for our Parish Office. Please see the details of this position below.
- The St. Philip Neri K of C are once again offering a $500 post-high school scholarship. Please see more details below.
- Just a reminder that there will be a Freedom Friday gathering THIS Friday, June 9, but NO Freedom Friday gathering on Friday, June 16. More details are below.
- For the month of June, we are collecting peanut butter and jam for the Friendship Inn. May was a great month for donations! Thank you for continuing to fill our bin for the hungry folks in our Sasaktoon community! Check out details below.
- The next Bereavement Support group will be on Tuesday, June 20, from 1-3 pm. Please scroll down for more information.
- A reminder that the Golden Age Card players will be having their final get-together THIS Wed. June 14 at Smiley's Restaurant, beginning with lunch at 12:00 noon.
- Please note: Adoration on Thursday, July 13 will be from 9 am to 1 pm, (instead of to 6 pm), and will be held in the Chapel.
- Check out this week's Church Chuckle! The "original" - and still annoying - GPS system!
- As far as some Diocesan announcements go:
- The 10th Anniversary Conference - Rebuilding Catholic Culture is coming up next month, on July 14 & 15 at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Please see all the details for this interesting conference, including the four outstanding presenters, below.
- All mothers deserve a night out once in awhile, regardless of their age or stage of motherhood! Check out Mama's Night Out, coming up NEXT Tuesday, June 13, at St. Paul Co-Cathedral by finding all the details down below.
- The Diocesan Sts. Benedict & Scholastica Formation Program is accepting new applications for the 2023-24 year. To find out more about this wonderful program and how to get involved, scroll down below, in green.
- The Saskatoon Alliance for Life has a great Resource Centre for anyone looking for Pro-Life materials. Their AGM (Annual General Meeting) is also coming up in late June and everyone is welcome to attend. Please see more information below.
- Sadly, the horrible war in Ukraine continues and millions of Ukrainians have been displaced. If you are interested in finding new ways to support our struggling Ukrainian brothers and sisters, please read below about the work of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of SK.
- The Saskatoon Open Door Society is looking for art/craft supplies and sports equipment for the summer camps they run for newcomer children. Scroll down below to see how you can help them out!
- A final reminder about the Blumenfeld and Grosswerder Pilgrimages coming up THIS week, on June 11 and 13. More details remain below, in blue.
- Looking for a really amazing camp experience for your kids from Kindergarden to Grade 6? Check out Camp Compassion, a four-day Day Camp being held over at Queen's House in August. Talk about helping our kids learn about how to be compassionate people while having a blast doing fun activities with others!
- Save the date! The Grow Hope Field Day, out at Bruno, is happening on Sun. Aug. 13. Scroll down below to meet the farmers involved with this imortant event and for more details.
- Queen's House Retreat and Renewal Centre offers SO many faith-building programs and retreats that are open to all of us. Please click on the button I have provided below to see what they might have coming up that could meet your sprititual development needs.
That's it for this week! TWO pre-season Rider wins?! Yes, I KNOW they were "just" pre-season games, but it's still fun to get the wins and get excited about all the positive changes and the new possibilities for this season. Our first regular season game is THIS Sunday, against the Edmonton Elks! Cheer loud and proud! Let's keep the winning streak going - GO Riders!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone! The weather looks stellar - sunny and toasty (hopefully without the smoky haze)! Enjoy these temperatures and our beautiful surroundings - that we wait for all year! Talk to you next week!
Balmy Blessings,
Marlene

We have SO much to be "grate"-ful for! We would like to send warm words of thanks to all the parishioners who attended our Parish BBQ last Sunday, and for bringing your awesome salads and desserts for the food tables - everything was so delicious! Thank you also to all those hard-working, efficient, volunteers who helped with the BBQ set-up, serving and clean-up - really great job! Special thanks to the "Burger King" (Merv) and his K of C BBQing Brothers for preparing all the burgers and hot dogs for us, and finally to the St. Philip Neri Parish Council, especially Guy Werbicki and Rachelle Brockman for helping to organize this wonderful event! Rebuilding Catholic Culture 10th Anniversary Conference
Fri. July 14 & Sat. July 15
Rebuilding Catholic Culture presents “Catholic Thought Contests Modernity: Newman, Chesterton, O’Connor, and Benedict XVI”, on July 14 and 15, at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Pope Pius X called Modernism “the synthesis of all heresies” (Pascendi Moninici Gregis, par. 39). What exactly is modernism, why does it matter, and what means does the Catholic intellectual and literary tradition offer to ordinary Catholics to help us grasp the truths of our faith more clearly in the modern world? This conference explores the Church’s confrontations with modernity, and examines the responses to modern error of four important Catholic thinkers and writers. The conference will host exciting talks by Fr. Geoffrey Young, Dr. Ryan Topping, Dr. Celene Sidloski, and Fr. Gregory Hrynkiw.
The opening keynote on Friday, July 14 at 7:00 pm is a free dessert night (please RSVP). The full-day Saturday, July 15 event requires pre-registration and features an opening Mass, four talks, lunch, and a question period/social. Cost of the full-day event is $50/person, $80/couple, and $20/student.
To reserve a ticket, please contact Celene Sidloski at csidloski@stmcollege.ca or phone (306) 715-1541.
