Magical self-care for your holiday season

I don't know about you guys, but saying goodbye to October was hard. It might just be my favorite of all the months. The colors, the spooky decorations, the first appearance of cozy hats and sweaters ... sigh. I feel like November is the gloomiest month, especially in the Pacific Northwest, where it is now getting dark at 4:30 (UGH). December is just as gloomy, but all the holiday shiny things and celebrations make it feel bright and festive. I used to have strong feelings about Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving, but my kids and I are already singing carols and if I could reasonably get a tree this weekend I would. I guess this year I need a little Christmas (right this very minute)!

On the other hand, all the fog and rain the past couple weeks have been VERY conducive to staying inside and working on books 2 and 3 of The Faery RehistoryThe Raven Lady is currently in edits, and I'm also writing The Warrior Poet. They'll be here before you know it! (And be sure to watch for next month's newsletter, because I'm going to be sharing the freshly edited first chapter of The Raven Lady!)

If you too have found yourself in need of a pick-me-up, I have just the thing. My wonderful guest author has written a piece on self-care for the season! We'll jump into that in a second, but first I wanted to ask a favor. If you've read my latest release—book 1 in The Faery Rehistory Series, The Absinthe Earl—and haven't reviewed it yet, could you take a moment to write a line or two on Amazon or Goodreads or BookBub? It really does help to get the word out! You have my heartfelt thanks.

In addition to my work on the upcoming books, I've been getting even more into Instagram. I find it to be such a fun creative outlet, and as far as social media goes, it's the only one that doesn't seem to raise my blood pressure. If you haven't already, you can find me there at:

And speaking of Instagram, I met this month's guest author, Gwen Mitchell, at a local RWA chapter meeting where she was teaching a class on Instagram for authors, Thanks to her, I've really upped my game!

You guys are in for a real treat—Gwen is witchy and wonderful (I know I can say that without offending her!) and has some magical self-care rituals to share with us. You can check out her awesome Instagram at:

Gwen is a fellow fantasy romance author who weaves "tales of magic and mysticism in fictional worlds," and her books pack "adventure, romance, and a sprinkle of angst (all the feels!)." Isn't this a magical cover? You can read more about her books on her website

Hello Sharon & Cozy Readers!

Thank you so much for the invitation to be here. I’ve decided to share a few magical self-care rituals that keep me cozy and content through the autumn/winter months. It’s so important to carve out time to nurture our bodies and souls during the rush and bustle of the holidays. Each of these takes less than half an hour, so schedule the time—you are worth it, and we all know a little cozy goes a long way.

The first is a potion I use whenever I am feeling rundown or like I might be getting sick. It’s a low-calorie, high-protein, delicious snack packed with vital minerals and immune boosters. I make this at least once a week during the cold and flu season, and it works like a charm!

Combine the following ingredients and bring to a simmer in the cauldron:

  • 2C Organic Chicken Bone Broth (bonus if it’s homemade)
  • ½ TSP Turmeric
  • ½ TSP Garlic (fresh, minced, or powder)
  • 1 TSP raw sea salt or +/- to taste

Next, the power of a good long soak cannot be overstated. It relaxes the muscles and calms the mind. Here is a way to take your next bath up a notch with a little sprinkle of witchery:

  • Add 1 C of Epsom salt. Magnesium is best absorbed through the skin and helps with muscle cramps and insomnia, with bonus skin-softening properties.
  • Add 9 drops of your favorite essential oil. I recommend lavender, rose, chamomile, or mint, but play with any combination you love.
  • Bring some crystals in the bath with you. Rose quartz for self-love, amethyst for tranquility, clear quartz for cleansing & clarity.
  • Combine with candles and some relaxing music for a truly spiritual experience.

Finally, I love to give myself time to reflect and set intentions each month coinciding with the phases of the moon. This grounding practice ensures I’m moving through the hectic times with a sense of purpose and peace. Combining this journal practice with meditation really amps up the potency.

Journal Prompts for the New Moon:

  • What do I need for myself/in my life that I have not been getting lately?
  • What seeds am I planting for the next month? What do I want to manifest?
  • What word/intention will best support me in this endeavor?

Journal Prompts for the Full Moon:

  • What has been my biggest struggle the past month?
  • How can I let go of this and move past it?
  • How can I show up for myself more and make sure I’m supported?
  • What negative thoughts or limiting beliefs do I need to release?

You could combine all three of these things twice a month for some sacred “me” time or use one of them when you need a quick serenity boost.

Wishing you all a joyful winter season full of magical moments!

~Gwen

What a perfect note to end on for November! I want to wish you and your family a cozy, warm, and delicious Thanksgiving holiday, if you celebrate it, and also to say that one of the things I am most thankful for is you, dear reader. I couldn't do what I do without you.  -xo
