From the Director
Dear NEXT Village Community -
Spare Key, anyone? NEXT's Well-Being Checks explained
Did you know that NEXT instigates Well-Being Checks on our members when we feel that something might be amiss? The process involves staff first calling the emergency contacts you provided when you joined, and if that isn’t successful, we contact the police using a non-emergency number to ask them to send an officer out to check on you. Sometimes it can take hours for the police to arrive, and if there’s no one to let them in (don’t assume that the property manager will unlock the door for the police), precious time can be wasted. Unless there’s a fire in your apartment, or they can hear you calling out for help, the police will not break down your door to check on you. One way to expedite access to your home is to give a trusted neighbor, relative, or friend a key to your door. If you live somewhere with a gate, or a community door, check with your landlord to see what keys can be shared. In an emergency, every minute counts.
NEXT volunteers will soon be performing a call through, focusing first on members who use services with some frequency, to inquire as to whether someone has access to your home in the event of an emergency. If you have already shared a key with someone, please feel free to call us at 415-301-3742 or email us: camille@nextvillagesf.org so that we can update our records. Thank you.
Thank you, board member, Barbara Blake
NEXT bids a fond farewell to board member, Barbara Blake. Barbara, a long-time member of NEXT, cheerfully took on the daunting task of soliciting donations and gift certificates from local businesses for our annual auction. It truly was something to behold! Thank you, Barbara! We will miss you and we wish you the very best. If you're interested in serving on our board, please let us know!
Good news for Medicare recipients who take prescription drugs!
Be sure to scroll down to our "News You Can Use" column for a more detailed list of the benefits of the Medicare Prescription Drug changes found in the newly-passed Inflation Reduction Act. Unfortunately, the changes won't take effect until 2024, but hey, it’s still good news.
UPDATE YOUR APPLE DEVICES, ASAP!
APPLE quietly reported, via their support page, that all Apple devices are at serious risk for hacking, therefore, it is imperative that you update your devices. NEXT will host a Zoom workshop this Friday, August 26th at 12:00pm where we will cover how to update your devices and stand for questions (we will host several breakout rooms so we can answer specific questions). CLICK HERE to register for Friday's Zoom
In the meantime, here is a link to how to update your devices: Update my Mac Computer. Update my phone or iPad
If you still have questions, meet us Friday on Zoom or contact Camille, camille@nextvillagesf.org or 415-301-3742 to connect with a volunteer.
We hope to see you soon, Around The Village! Until then, take care,
Jacqueline & the team at NEXT.
PS: I took this photo at Silver Falls State Park located east of Salem, OR. There are 10 waterfalls in an eight-mile loop. It was a treat to share them with some CA friends during a quick trip to Oregon. We are enjoying photos from your summer travels, so keep them coming!

Meet Julie, the new NEXT Village Office Manager!
Greetings! I am delighted to join the NEXT Village team as
Office Manager. Drop by our office at 704 Filbert Street, next door to Victoria
Pastry, and say hello. I first moved to North Beach in
2005 and, after a six year hiatus in Florida, I am thrilled to return to the
neighborhood. Originally from New York, I had a rewarding career practicing law
in Massachusetts and California. Pro bono work, as a lawyer, and volunteer
work, as a citizen, has always been a priority, starting at a young age, when I
volunteered at Stone Soup Festivals, organized by Pete and Toshi Seeger, on the
banks of the Hudson River. More recently,
as a volunteer for The Florida Springs Institute, I learned the importance of a
cohesive community in persuading officials and administrators to maintain the
quantity and quality of water flowing from the Florida aquifer. I am a huge SF
Giants fan, enjoy walking and exploring the Bay Area, and taking advantage of
the wonderful art museums and performing arts venues here.
You may contact me
at julie@nextvillagesf.org, or by calling the NEXT Village
Office: 415-625-9023. – Sláinte (to health)! Julie

Camille's Volunteer Corner
Meet Nina!
Hi! My name is Nina and I moved to San Francisco earlier this year for work. Soon after that, I learned about NEXT Village SF and resonated with its mission.
I enjoy helping members with home tasks, doing friendly visits, and joining them on walks. Volunteering is a creative activity that allows me to be helpful and get involved in my new community. I've learned so much about San Francisco and my wonderful neighbors!
Nina, thank you for volunteering your time and going above and beyond! If a NEXT Village volunteer put a smile on your face or went above & beyond, feel free to let us know and we'll pass it on!
Be well - Camille. 415-574-0156, Camille@nextvillagesf.org

Governor Gavin Newsom has nominated queer Alameda County Superior Court Judge Kelli Evans to the state's Supreme Court. If confirmed, she will be the first out LGBTQ woman and second out African American to serve on it.
A Black married mother, Evans would double out representation on the state's highest court, as Newsom in 2020 named Martin J. Jenkins, a gay Black man, as an associate justice. He was confirmed November 10 that year.
Newsom had appointed Evans to the superior court in the East Bay last year. Evans and her wife, Terri Shaw, have a daughter in college and live in Oakland.

老人掉牙后要注意什么?
What causes tooth loss in seniors?

Why is she reluctant to go to new places when she used to love it? September is National Falls Prevention Month -
Did you know?
Falls are the leading cause of death to injury to those over 65. One in four seniors has a fall each year.
Falls account for 40% of all nursing home admissions
Falls are also the leading cause of injury related to emergency department visits for older adults
Falls are the leading cause of hip fractures and responsible for more than half of fatal head injuries
Nearly half of all seniors sustaining a fall do not resume independent living.
Here are seven simple exercises you can do to improve your balance and strength. Do a few repetitions at least twice a week and you should see benefits! Hold on to a chair or other support, if you need.
Heel lifts - stand with both feet flat on the ground. Raise your heels and stand on your tiptoes. Hold for a second and lower back down.
Toe Lifts - stand with both feet on the ground. Raise your toes in the air until your weight is on your heels. Hold for a second and lower your toes.
Leg lifts - stand and lift one leg off the ground. After 10 seconds, lower your leg. Switch sides and repeat.
Heel to toe walk - Slowly walk forward placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the other. Look ahead a bit if it helps keep your balance. Repeat for 20 steps.
Backward leg lifts - stand straight with feet shoulder width apart. Hold on again if you need to do so and lift one leg behind you and lower it back down. Switch sides.
Sit to stand - sit in a sturdy chair and place both feet on the floor. Stand using only your legs and slowly sit down again. You can hold your arms out in front of you or cross them.
Wall push-ups - place your hands on the wall at chest height with your fingers pointed up. Keep your back straight and slowly bend your elbows to bring your body toward the wall. Then straighten your arms to push away from the wall.

Scam of the Month
Renting a home or apartment is a big expense but it could be an even bigger one if the rental is a scam.
Criminals
copy legitimate listings and look for easy cash by collecting the first
month’s rent, deposit, and application fees and then bolt before
handing over the keys. Numerous versions of rental frauds abound – some
are bait-and-switch while others will attempt to rent out properties
that are already leased or otherwise unavailable.
These fake
rental schemes happen every year and would-be renters are losing
hundreds or even thousands of dollars. When renting a place, watch out
for scammers who ask you to sign before seeing anything or request
payment via wire transfer, peer to peer apps or cash. Do your research
on the property and owner and read agreements carefully.
Be a fraud fighter! If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam.
Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork
or call the AARP Fraud Watch Helpline at 1-877-908-3360 and speak to
trained staff or volunteers for help with a fraud encounter.

Medicare Prescription Drug Provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act
|
|
Good news! (In a few years, anyway.)
The reconciliation bill, which passed Aug. 12 in the House and now goes to President Joe Biden, would lower at least some Medicare beneficiaries’ prescription costs on Part D, Medicare’s prescription drug program, and on Part B, which covers drugs administered in a doctor’s office, by:
Requiring the federal government to negotiate prices for some Medicare drugs, 10 medications to start in 2026, rising to 20 in 2029.
Capping seniors’ out-of-pocket costs at $2,000 a year for Medicare’s prescription drugs.
Requiring rebates from drug companies if their prices increase faster than inflation.
Expanding eligibility for prescription drug benefits in the Part D low-income subsidy program.
Capping monthly insulin copays at $35.
Making vaccines free, with no out-of-pocket costs.
Limiting Part D premium increases.
Impact on Beneficiaries
Seniors who spend more than $2,000 a year on prescriptions would clearly benefit. That provision would launch in 2025, and could affect more than 1.4 million beneficiaries, according to Kaiser Family Foundation estimates based on 2020 enrollee data.
Right now, out-of-pocket costs of more than $7,050 for Part D drugs bumps seniors into what’s called the “catastrophic” phase — they pay 5% of their drug costs after that threshold. The reconciliation bill — called the Inflation Reduction Act — would eliminate the 5% copay in 2024, benefiting more than 1.3 million seniors, KFF estimates, as a precursor to implementing the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap the following year.
NEXT will provide more information on this new legislation, as well as a presentation as more information becomes available. In the meantime, learn more at: https://www.aarp.org/politics-...
