In every newsletter, we share a summary of how IEA studies have progressed in recent months. This includes an overview of IEA's flagship studies and other studies that IEA is a part of. 

The IEA Research and Development (R&D) call is open. The R&D program welcomes proposals that improve and advance the science and methodology of IEA studies; the deadline for submitting proposals is 15 September 2025. Find out more about the call.

The TIMSS 2023 restricted-use event log files are available upon request. The files contain time-stamped records of item responses, answer changes, and interaction with the assessment content. Find out more about requesting the files.

Proposals are open for the latest Research for Education call. Potential themes include school ICT infrastructure, informal digital practices, and the influence of emerging technologies like AI. Authors of the selected proposal will receive funding of up to €40,000 to support the development of the volume.

The LaNA 2023 Linking Study International Database (IDB) is available. The open-access database contains achievement data and contextual data associated with learning factors such as available resources, students' learning experiences, and the learning environment.

• IEA will be at ECER in Belgrade, Serbia 09−12 September. IEA will have an active presence at ECER in symposia's, workshops, and paper presentations. IEA colleagues can also be found in the exhibition hall.
• The three-day IERI Autumn Academy will take place in Hamburg, Germany in October. Registration is open and limited to 25 participants.  
• The launch of the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal Report and Results will take place on 09 December. The release will be livestreamed. Find out more.
• The European Commission's Learning Lab has launched an open call on Investing in Quality Education and Training. Applications will be evaluated based on policy relevance and the feasibility of implementing a randomized control trial design. The deadline is 19 September. 

IEA and the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College are pleased to announce the release of a new TIMSS Insights report that delves into students' environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, using data from TIMSS 2023. As environmental sustainability rises on the global agenda, this report contributes valuable findings to support efforts in education for sustainable development.

IEA is pleased to announce the release of IEA’s Technical Standards for International Large-Scale Assessment. Developed by the IEA Technical Executive Group, this new publication reflects over 25 years of evolution in the field of international large-scale assessments since the publication of the first Technical Standards in 1999.

The latest PIRLS Insights report delves into the relationship between fourth-grade students' home socioeconomic status and their reading achievement. Using the newly created Home Socioeconomic Status scale, the report reveals a strong positive correlation between home socioeconomic status and reading performance. 

Teaching Reading Comprehension in a Digital World: Evidence-Based Contributions Using PIRLS and Digital Texts—the latest volume in the IEA Research for Educators series, developed and authored by the Dutch Center for Language Education—aims to empower teachers to integrate digital text reading into their curriculum. Teacher job satisfaction is pivotal for retaining competent, qualified teachers and for enhancing their overall well-being at work. With 44 million additional teachers needed worldwide by 2030 the latest IEA Compass: Brief in Education discusses the association between 
school-working conditions, school leadership, student discipline, teacher workload, and job satisfaction among eighth-grade mathematics teachers.  

The IERI journal, Large-scale Assessments in Education, continues to publish regularly and has released 12 new articles since March 2025. Recent titles can be found here.
