August 2020 - Fond Farewells and Takeouts

https://www.friendsofhardiepark.co.uk/cafe/time_for_takeout/

Rob Groves the founder of Friends of Hardie Park will be spreading his wings and leaving us at the end of September passing the reigns to our Team of Trustees. You may have seen our official Trustee statement published earlier in the month on social media?

It's a fond farewell from us to our very own community champion!

'The amazing Hardie Park and its projects have been guided and driven by Rob Groves for many years. His vision for community, his ability to bring people into the fold and take action is a formula marvelled by many. The park’s legacy speaks volumes.

It is with our support and blessing that the Board of Trustees have accepted Rob’s wish to leave the park in our safe hands to explore new opportunities. Rob will be with us until the end of September. Trustees are working to ensure a smooth transition and, with the help of our amazing staff and volunteer team will ensure the continued operation of day-to-day activities in the park. Thank you Rob!

Good Luck Mr G! New opportunities await and we wish you every success!

It's now time for TAKEOUT!

We're so pleased to be able to open the cafe from this Friday - we've not rushed doing this as we wanted to ensure the safety of our staff and volunteers, but the team have pulled together in recent weeks to come up with a new take out service.

Thanks to all involved for their input!

We can't wait to see you all again at the cafe - please do bear with us though while we get used to our new way of working!

As ever we welcome any feedback on how we're doing - drop us a line at trustees@friendsofhardiepark.co.uk if you have any thoughts or comments.

Matt Adams - Chair of Trustees

The park's trustee team volunteer behind the scenes...let's introduce you to Chris and Fabiana!

Chris Meads, Vice-Chair has been a trustee and volunteer at Hardie Park for a few years. He enjoys spending time at the park, so much so that you can often find him behind the counter as a volunteer serving our cafe fare. Chris has two grown up sons and is now retired from his role in a military uniform business. His background in Sales/Marketing and Public Relations Worldwide is a skill he now puts to good use for the benefit of the park.

There’s nothing better than seeing families enjoying the park, after school, in the holidays or at one of our many events. It is a community gem and a haven for many people in the local area. I thoroughly enjoy working with the wonderful team we have at Hardie.’

Fabiana Goodall has been a trustee at HP for a couple of years now. She has lived in Stanford for 7 years and has travelled to Stanford le hope for many more years on the school run with her two, now grown up, sons. Fabiana is a recently retired qualified accountant, and worked in a governance role in Corporate Finance. Her governance role involved looking at processes, making sure they were working as they should, and always looked for ways to make them better. She led the company’s fundraising activities in the UK for around 20 years and uses those skills to help Hardie Park where she can.

‘I am pleased to be able to provide support and advice to the charity as a trustee. Hardie Park provides a special place for many local residents in our community, a real beating heart in our midst. It’s great to be part of the team.’

Old Spokes Home servicing success

The Big Bike Revival for Key Workers project has seen the national cycling charity 'We are cycling UK' work with partners throughout England/Scotland providing free maintenance checks and bike loans to enable frontline workers to keep riding through the crisis.

The cycle hub team have serviced 11 key worker bikes to date. Amazing!  There's still time to get your free service as a keyworker if you are quick! - Scheme finishes end of August!

There's a scheme for non-keyworkers too. If you've got yourself a voucher already, we can still fix your bike!

https://fixyourbikevoucherscheme.est.org.uk/

The Fix Your Bike Voucher Scheme aims to encourage more people in England to embrace cycling as an alternative to private cars and public transport, particularly while social distancing measures are in place. The scheme has been open to anyone who has an unused cycle in need of a repair. It's in place to help you to get your bike back on the road by providing £50 towards the cost of a service and repair for up to two cycles per household.

To date the team have serviced 12 bikes on the government fix your bike voucher scheme..

Ross our cycle hub apprentice has recently published a video link on the Hardie Cycle Hub facebook page explaining the 'M' check. A set of simple checks that can ensure a hassle free ride on your bike.  Hop over to the @hardiecyclehub page on FB to check it out.

And the winner is...

The results are in and the winner is LEN with a sunflower measuring 69 cm

Congratulations!! Len won a children's meal for two with a rossi ice-cream to finish - a voucher has been delivered ready for when the cafe is up and running.

There were some unfortunate slug accidents for some of our runners-up, no worries there's a Rossi Ice-cream waiting for you too compliments of Hardie Park Trustee Team

Ava, Donny, Olly and Erny you are all stars!

Even our competition trial samples planted on the 26th May were late flowers with some only just showing a flower. A top tip to grow a giant like some of the plants in the park is an earlier start date next year

Gardeners update from our lead volunteer Jean

There's lots on the TO DO list, hey-ho....here we go....

We have been busy planting up the cycle tubs with begonias for Summer impact.

We are painting the tyres and wood to match the pétanque pitch

We are constantly fighting against the weather to keep everything watered.

We are looking to plant some more spring bulbs.

Last but not least....planning the planting for next year with a view to repeating the look of the hydrangea bed into some of the other flower beds.

The Hardie Park Gardeners meet every Friday at the park from about 10am. They are a jolly bunch and welcome any extra hands.
