3/11/14 - Touchstone - $18.99
At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, and consumed more electricity than New York City, yet it was shrouded in such secrecy that it did not appear on any map. Thousands of civilians, many of them young women from small towns across the U.S., were recruited to this secret city, enticed by the promise of solid wages and war-ending work. What were they actually doing there? Very few knew. The purpose of this mysterious government project was kept a secret from the outside world and from the majority of the residents themselves. Some wondered why, despite the constant work and round-the-clock activity in this makeshift town, did no tangible product of any kind ever seem to leave its guarded gates? The women who kept this town running would find out at the end of the war, when Oak Ridge’s secret was revealed and changed the world forever.
Drawing from the voices and experiences of the women who lived and worked in Oak Ridge, The Girls of Atomic City rescues a remarkable, forgotten chapter of World War II from obscurity. Denise Kiernan captures the spirit of the times through these women: their pluck, their desire to contribute, and their enduring courage. “A phenomenal story,” and Publishers Weekly called it an “intimate and revealing glimpse into one of the most important scientific developments in history.”

Nico's dreams and Rachel Dare's latest prophecy leave little doubt in Nico's mind that Bob is in some kind of trouble. Nico has to go on this quest, whether Mr. D and Chiron like it or not. And of course Will insists on coming with. But can a being made of light survive in the darkest part of the world? and what does the prophecy mean that Nico will have to "leave something of equal value behind?"

5/16/23 - Penguin Random House - $28.00
A young woman pretends to be someone she isn’t in this stunning novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Girls.
“Alex drained her wineglass, then her water glass. The ocean looked calm, a black darker than the sky. A ripple of anxiety made her palms go damp. It seemed suddenly very tenuous to believe that anything would stay hidden, that she could successfully pass from one world to another.”
Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome.
A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city.
With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her. Propelled by desperation and a mutable sense of morality, she spends the week leading up to Labor Day moving from one place to the next, a cipher leaving destruction in her wake.
Taut, propulsive, and impossible to look away from, Emma Cline’s The Guest is a spellbinding literary achievement.

5/23/23 - Doubleday - $29.00
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of While Justice Sleeps returns with another riveting and intricately plotted thriller, in which a blackmailed federal judge, a secret court and a brazen murder may lead to an unprecedented national crisis.
Supreme Court clerk Avery Keene is back, trying to get her feet on solid ground after unraveling an international conspiracy in While Justice Sleeps. But as the sparks of Congressional hearings and political skirmishes swirl around her, Avery is approached at a legal conference by Preston Davies, an unassuming young man and fellow law clerk to a federal judge in Idaho. Davies believes his boss, Judge Francesca Whitner, was being blackmailed in the days before she died. Desperate to understand what happened, he gives Avery a file, a burner phone, and a fearful warning that there are highly dangerous people involved.
Another shocking murder leads Avery to a list of names – all federal judges – and, alarmingly, all judges on the FISA Court (the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court), also known as America’s "secret court." It is this body which grants permission to the government to wiretap Americans or spy on corporations suspected of terrorism. As Avery digs deeper, she begins to see a frightening pattern – and she worries that something far more sinister may be unfolding inside the nation’s third branch of government. With lives at stake, Avery must race the clock and an unexpected enemy to find the answer.
Drawn from today’s headlines and woven with her unique insider perspective, Stacey Abrams combines twisting plotlines, wry wit, and clever puzzles to create another immensely entertaining suspense novel.

8/8/23 - Riverhead Books- $28.00
From James McBride, author of the bestselling Oprah’s Book Club pick Deacon King Kong and the National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird, a novel about small-town secrets and the people who keep them
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill, who worked together to keep the boy safe.
As these characters’ stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins of white, Christian America struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community—heaven and earth—that sustain us.
Bringing his masterly storytelling skills and his deep faith in humanity to The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, James McBride has written a novel as compassionate as Deacon King Kong and as inventive as The Good Lord Bird.

3/21/23 - Penguin Books - $19.00
The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America
In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction—to the City of New York.
Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles's third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes. “Once again, I was wowed by Towles’s writing—especially because The Lincoln Highway is so different from A Gentleman in Moscow in terms of setting, plot, and themes. Towles is not a one-trick pony. Like all the best storytellers, he has range. He takes inspiration from famous hero’s journeys, including The Iliad, The Odyssey, Hamlet, Huckleberry Finn, and Of Mice and Men. He seems to be saying that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as an interstate highway. But, he suggests, when something (or someone) tries to steer us off course, it is possible to take the wheel.” – Bill Gates

A mother vanished. A father presumed guilty. There is no proof. There are no witnesses. For the children, there is only doubt. From the New York Times bestselling author of Defending Jacob. . . . “Astonishing, powerful, and provocative, this book is worth the excruciating wait for another William Landay.”—Louise Penny, author of A World of Curiosities One afternoon in November 1975, ten-year-old Miranda Larkin comes home from school to find her house eerily quiet. Her mother is missing. Nothing else is out of place. There is no sign of struggle. Her mom’s pocketbook remains in the front hall, in its usual spot. So begins a mystery that will span a lifetime. What happened to Jane Larkin? Investigators suspect Jane’s husband. A criminal defense attorney, Dan Larkin would surely be an expert in outfoxing the police. But no evidence is found linking him to a crime, and the case fades from the public’s memory, a simmering, unresolved riddle. Jane’s three children—Alex, Jeff, and Miranda—are left to be raised by the man who may have murdered their mother. Two decades later, the remains of Jane Larkin are found. The investigation is awakened. The children, now grown, are forced to choose sides. With their father or against him? Guilty or innocent? And what happens if they are wrong? A tale about family—family secrets and vengeance, but also family love—All That Is Mine I Carry With Me masterfully grapples with a primal question: When does loyalty reach its limit?

On a cold November evening, Guido Brunetti and Paola are up late when a call from his colleague Ispettore Vianello arrives, alerting the Commissario that a hand has been seen in one of Venice’s canals. The body is soon found, and Brunetti is assigned to investigate the murder of an undocumented Sri Lankan immigrant. Because no official record of the man’s presence in Venice exists, Brunetti is forced to use the city’s far richer sources of information: gossip and the memories of people who knew the victim. Curiously, he had been living in a small house on the grounds of a palazzo owned by a university professor, in which Brunetti discovers books revealing the victim’s interest in Buddhism, the revolutionary Tamil Tigers, and the last crop of Italian political terrorists, active in the 1980s.
As the investigation expands, Brunetti, Vianello, Commissario Griffoni, and Signora Elettra each assemble pieces of a puzzle—random information about real estate and land use, books, university friendships—that appear to have little in common, until Brunetti stumbles over something that transports him back to his own student days, causing him to reflect on lost ideals and the errors of youth, on Italian politics and history, and on the accidents that sometimes lead to revelation.

3/28/23 - G.P. Putnam's Sons - $28.00
#1 bestselling author Lisa Scottoline presents Loyalty, an emotional, action-packed epic of love and justice, set during the rise of the Mafia in Sicily.
Loyalty can save a soul—or destroy one.
Franco Fiorvanti is a handsome lemon grower toiling on the estate of a baron. He dreams of owning his own grove, but the rigid class system of Sicily thwarts his ambition. Determined to secure a better future, Franco will do anything to prove his loyalty to the baron. But when the baron asks him to kidnap a little boy named Dante, Franco makes a decision that will change his life—and even the history of Sicily—forever.
Gaetano Catalano is an idealistic young lawyer whose devotion to justice is tantamount to a calling. He’s a member of the Beati Paoli, a real-life secret society of aristocrats who investigate crime in Palermo, a city riddled with graft. Gaetano sets out to find the boy and punish the kidnapper, but his mission leads him to a darker place than he had ever imagined.
Meanwhile, Mafalda Pancari is a new mother rejoicing at the birth of her daughter, Lucia, when disaster strikes. And Alfredo D’Antonio is a reclusive goatherd under constant threat of being discovered as a Jew. How the lives of these unforgettable characters collide makes Loyalty an epic tale of good versus evil, as the story twists and turns to its monumental showdown.
Readers will be transported to the dramatic and ruggedly beautiful island of Sicily, the jewel of the Mediterranean, where lush lemon groves and mouth-watering cuisine contrast with a turbulent history of colonization and corruption. Scottoline brings her decades of thriller writing to historical fiction, creating in Loyalty a singular novel that no reader will be able to put down.

The shocking secret history of twentieth-century orphanages—which for decades hid violence, abuse, and deaths within their walls
For much of the twentieth century, a series of terrible events—abuse, both physical and psychological, and even deaths—took places inside orphanages. The survivors have been trying to tell their astonishing stories for a long time, but disbelief, secrecy, and trauma have kept them from breaking through. For ten years, Christine Kenneally has been on a quest to uncover the harrowing truth. Centering her story on St. Joseph’s, a Catholic orphanage in Vermont, Kenneally has written a stunning account of a series of crimes and abuses. But her work is not confined to one place. Following clues that take her into the darkened corners of several institutions across the globe, she finds a trail of terrifying stories and a courageous group of survivors who are seeking justice. Ghosts of the Orphanage is an incredible true crime story and a reckoning with a past that has stayed buried for too long, with tragic consequences.

3/21/23 - Hachette Books - $30.00
The riveting, forgotten narrative of the most corrupt attorney general in American history and the maverick senator who stopped at nothing to take him down
Many tales from the Jazz Age reek of crime and corruption. But perhaps the era’s greatest political fiasco—one that resulted in a nationwide scandal, a public reckoning at the Department of Justice, the rise of J. Edgar Hoover, and an Oscar-winning film—has long been lost to the annals of history. In Crooked, Nathan Masters restores this story of murderers, con artists, secret lovers, spies, bootleggers, and corrupt politicians to its full, page-turning glory.
Newly elected to the Senate on a promise to root out corruption, Burton "Boxcar Burt" Wheeler sets his sights on ousting Attorney General Harry Daugherty, puppet-master behind President Harding’s unlikely rise to power. Daugherty is famous for doing whatever it takes to keep his boss in power, and his cozy relations with bootleggers and other scofflaws have long spawned rumors of impropriety. But when his constant companion and trusted fixer, Jess Smith, is found dead of a gunshot wound in the apartment the two men share, Daugherty is suddenly thrust into the spotlight, exposing the rot consuming the Harding administration to a shocked public.
Determined to uncover the truth in the ensuing investigation, Wheeler takes the prosecutorial reins and subpoenas a rogue’s gallery of witnesses—convicted felons, shady detectives, disgraced officials—to expose the attorney general’s treachery and solve the riddle of Jess Smith’s suspicious death. With the muckraking senator hot on his trail, Daugherty turns to his greatest weapon, the nascent Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose eager second-in-command, J. Edgar Hoover, sees opportunity amidst the chaos.
Packed with political intrigue, salacious scandal, and no shortage of lessons for our modern era of political discord, Nathan Masters’ thrilling historical narrative shows how this intricate web of inconceivable crookedness set the stage for the next century of American political scandals.

From the comedic mind of Jonathan Fenske, Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor-winning creator of A Pig, a Fox, and a Box, comes a hilarious picture book about what happens when a unicorn, a dinosaur, and a shark "walk" into a book. Fenske's appealing illustration style and clever text make this intriguing book a must-have for every young reader's shelf.
Absurdity abounds in this funny picture book that tries to tell the tale of a unicorn, a dinosaur, and a shark.
While the narrator insists that the characters are in the best book ever, they are all less than impressed, and won't cooperate with the storyteller's cues. Can the narrator find a way to convince them to stick around, or will the creatures choose to skedaddle off the page?
Perfect for fans of The Book with No Pictures and Kevin the Unicorn: It's Not All Rainbows!

No Exit by Taylor Adams
|
|
No Exit is no ordinary suspense thriller. It is scary and terrifying, verging on horror! The novel starts with Darby, a young college student, rushing home to see her sick mother and being forced to stop at a mountainous Colorado rest area because of the blizzard she couldn't out run. There is a 7 year old little girl locked in a dog cage in the back of a van, who Darby accidentally discovers, and there are 4 strangers, one of whom is obviously a kidnapper. Things go from bad to worse to much worse, as Darby is determined to save the child no matter what it takes. It has been years since I have read such an anxiety inducing nightmare of a scenario that could be all too real. This one is definitely not for the faint of heart.

The Kind Worth Saving by Peter Swanson
|
|
Some killers are actually good people and kill for good reasons, others are just plain evil and it is up to P.I. Henry Kimball to figure out if he is dealing with someone evil or if some of the things that bother him are just coincidental. The Kind Worth Saving is a companion book, or as Swanson says a 'half sequel', to The Kind Worth Killing but it is totally readable as a standalone and shows a lot more about who Henry really is.

Sometime we tell lies to protect those we love. Sometimes we tell lies to make ourselves look better. There are intentional lies and lies of omission, but they are still lies and will often come back to ruin your relationships or your life. Her five year struggle with infertility is bad enough for Olivia Bender, and then the murder happens. The lies are revealed, distrust and suspicion abound. There are lots of plot lines, lots of characters, and lots and lots of lies in this riveting new thriller from J. T. Ellison But the penultimate lie that is revealed changes everything. Wow! What an ending.

The Angel Maker by Alex North
|
|
Spine tingling, creepy, and full of evil, Angel Maker should be a slow and deliberate read for several reasons. It contains some interesting and thought provoking philosophical/religious ideas that I had never heard of - those of Determinism. The way these ideas were presented required a lot of thought and reflection. The storyline involved a lot of people and a lot of action over different timelines which also required a lot of going back and re-reading. And finally it was so intense at times that a time to calm down and relax was a good thing. When the story lines did finally merge I was definitely taken by surprise but considering what I knew about the evil characters and the main philosophical premise I shouldn't have been.

|
Alex Finley has written more of an action packed, Mission Impossible type thriller, than his previous books but I enjoyed it just as much, and his surprise at the end didn't disappoint. Twenty-five years ago, a group of teenagers lived at Savior house - a supposed safe haven for orphans. In order to be safe and survive the horrible things that were going on there they did something terrible and have carried that secret with them ever since. Now one of them is dead and several of the others have discovered that their supposed near deadly accidents were probably not accidents. They must get together again for the first time since they left that horrible place and try and figure out who is trying to kill them and who knows their secret.

The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark
|
|
Meg Williams is a con artist. She is very, very smart, and exceptionally good at what she does, and she has been waiting years for the opportunity to get revenge on her current mark. Kat Roberts was an up-and-coming journalist until 10 years earlier when Meg Williams called in a tip on a story on which she was working. That tip led Kat to a man who drugged and raped her and destroyed her life and career and she has blamed Meg ever since. For the past 10 years Kat has been trying to find Meg and uncover all her cons so she can write an expose and once again be a respected journalist. Suddenly Meg is in LA where Kat now lives, and Kat finds a way to get close to her. This should not be a feel-good story, it should not be a story of friendship, it should not leave you rooting for a con artist, but it is all that and more. Julia Clark has once again taken the stories of two strong women told alternately in their own voice and written a novel that you will not be able to put down and you won?t be able to put out of your mind for a long time after you have finished. If you loved The Last Flight trust me, The Lies I Tell is even better.

The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn

Once again Kate Quinn has written an un-put-downable historical thriller about a part of WWII we rarely read about. And once again she has taken a true story, that of the most famous female sniper in the world, and given us a character, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, who you will love and admire from page one of this extraordinary novel.

Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey
|
|
Hallie has been crushing on Julian since they were teenagers and he almost kissed her. Now she's grown up and taken over her grandmother's gardening business, but she's still as impulsive and chaotic as ever. Julian, meanwhile, home on a break from his professorship, turns out to be very controlled -- and having Hallie gardening outside his window is a major distraction that he's not sure he can handle, especially given his major attraction. Hallie and Julian have to learn to take each other -- and themselves -- as they are, flaws and all, if they have any shot of making something work between them. Bailey's characters and relationships are a joy to read, and I look forward to more from her.

Not Your Ex's Hexes by April Asher
|
|
Now that Rose is no longer slated to be the next head witch in charge, she's determined to try several hobbies and jobs to find her 'thing.' Which is partly how she finds herself serving community service hours at an animal sanctuary -- the one owned by Damian, her half-demon one-night stand from months ago. Now that they're spending time together, though, they can't deny their attraction, so they come up with a friends-with-benefits arrangement that mutually satisfies both of them -- Rose doesn't want a relationship after her recent messy break-up, and Damian has been hexed to lose his soul if he ever falls in love, so it's a win-win. Until, inevitably, feelings become involved. A swoony witchy rom-com that is every bit as good as Asher's previous book.

The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten
|
|
Lore has been able to channel Mortem -- death magic -- since she was born, something that is usually only possible when someone has been on the cusp of death. Her entire life has been spent keeping her head down so no one finds out her secret. But when she is found out, she's taken by the kingdom's religious order, and she's sure she's done for. But the king has other plans. Now Lore must work with Gabe, one of the monks of the order, to get close to Bastian, the prince. But when secrets come out, things get even more convoluted. This first-in-series will appeal to fans of Whitten's previous books, For the Wolf and its sequel, and dark fantasy a la Holly Black. I loved it.

A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley
|
|
Mariel is supposed to be a super powerful witch, as prophesied at her birth -- and as her mother reminds her constantly -- but she can't for the life of her do any kind of spellwork. So it's not completely surprising when a summoning spell goes wrong; what is surprising is when a demon shows up instead of the flour she expected, and he wants to bargain for her soul. Also not surprising is that Mariel doesn't want to admit her mistake to her mother, so instead she says that she and Ozroth are dating. But the attraction and feelings that develop between Mariel and Oz are very unexpected, and neither is quite sure what to do with them. Mariel's struggle with her family dynamics and her resulting self-confidence issues make her relatable, and readers will love how Oz stands up for her and helps her boost her own confidence.

Except as their friendship blossoms, they have to contend with the possibility that the person they want might be right in front of them -- and whether it would be worth ruining the best friendship they've ever had to see if it could be something more. Kristy Woodson Harvey does an excellent job weaving together Vanderbilt family history with Julia's own Baxter family history to create an intriguing plot, full of generational love stories that are often, as love is, complicated. |
Tobacco was king in North Carolina in the 1940s. Maddie Sykes is well-aware of that when her troubled mom abandons the 15-year-old at her Aunt Etta's house in Bright Leaf, NC. Maddie's experience helping Aunt Etta sew for the wives of the tobacco executives in town opens her eyes to privilege and wealth to which she is not accustomed. She also comes to realize the importance of the women who have taken over men's factory jobs during the war. Adele Myers's captivating debut novel covers the initial conspiracy of the tobacco industry to cover up damaging studies of cigarettes' harm, and the growth of Maddie into a young woman concerned about the health of her family and new friends in Bright Leaf. A beautiful coming-of-age historical novel that you shouldn't miss!

Deep Fake by Ward Larsen
|
|
This book creates a political landscape that may seem typical to those of us on the outside looking in. Sarah's husband Bryce has become a congressman after his medical retirement from the military. She appreciates having him home, and politics at the congressional level seem manageable. Then the unthinkable happens: a terror attack at a political fundraiser, and Bryce manages to thwart the attack and avoid any loss of life. The expected attention follows but doesn't dissipate as might be expected. All of a sudden, politics takes on an entirely new role in their lives, and her husband is even more distant than when deployed to another country while in the military. Sarah becomes more and more concerned and has no idea where to turn. As you read this book, you will also become more and more concerned; the world of politics may be even murkier than our wildest imagination. (Seconded by Nancy!)

American Mermaid by Julia Langbein
|
|
Penelope Schleeman is a fish out of water as an English teacher turned Hollywood screenplay writer. Thanks to authoring a bestselling book about a mermaid with a fierce environmental streak, Penelope sets about creating the right screen adaptation to showcase her character's true voice. Unfortunately, Hollywood likes their mermaids more domesticated, and Penelope's cowriters begin a vigorous remodeling campaign. American Mermaid is a smart and funny look at the creative world and the compromises that have to be made for the shiny, varnished end product. Langbein uses a touch of magic and colorful characters to remind us to choose our boundaries and our battles wisely.

Welcome to Pineapple Street, where the Stockton family reigns with old money and even older traditions. Sasha, Cord's wife, is the bohemian artist to the wealthy clan and always finds herself on the outside looking in. Jenny Jackson has created a funny and sharp behind the scenes look at New York's elite. These characters remind us that what we see on the outside is never quite the same as what is happening on the inside.
