Vol. 12, May 2023

Although the Searcy campus may be quieter during the summer, it is actually our office's busiest semester with eight study abroad programs scheduled. In May, we launched three semester-long programs (HUF, HUG & HIZ) and three shorter, departmental programs (COBA-London, ADI & SURF). Please continue reading to catch a glimpse of each program's activities this month, and check back next month to learn about our final two summer programs once they have started.

HUF
Harding University in Florence

The summer HUF group arrived in Italy on May 11th and since then they've been spending much of their time exploring Florence. They've done a walking tour of the city, cheered on the Fiorentina soccer team to a victory over Roma, rode horses and dug deeper into Florence with a scavenger hunt of the city. They've also taken part in their first overnight trip – a tour of Casentino Valley to visit several castles.

HUG

Harding University in Greece

HUG kicked off the summer study abroad semester by being the first program to depart the US on May 8th. The first two weeks of the semester were spent settling into life in Greece. A walking tour of Athens took our students to many famous landmarks, including the 1896 Olympic Stadium, the first of the modern Olympic era. As week three commenced, HUG boarded a flight to Egypt where they enjoyed visiting pyramids, cruising on the Nile for several days, exploring temples and ruins, and even experiencing camel rides.

HIZ

Harding in Zambia

The HIZ group began their semester in Kigali, Rwanda's capital. During their 10-day stay in Rwanda, they were educated on the history of the Rwandan genocide at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. They also ventured to Musanze, which is near the Volcanoes National Park, visited the Dian Fossey Museum to gain insight into her conservation efforts, and participated in a golden monkey tour (an endangered species found only in Rwanda). At the start of June, the group will move to their home in Zambia at the Namwianga Mission.

We should also point out that this summer marks the first time HIZ has ever taken place in the summer semester! We are excited about this change and believe that it will give many more students the opportunity to participate in the program in future semesters.

COBA-London

College of Business in London

During the summer, the College of Business provides a four-week tour of Europe for students to explore the historical sites and gain knowledge about the European business world. So far, the students have spent the past three weeks visiting Florence, Milan, Venice, Paris and London.

ADI
Art & Design International

At the conclusion of the spring semester, Art & Design students stayed in Searcy for two weeks taking classes before departing the US on May 22nd to travel around the world studying art for five weeks. Their first stop was Greece, where they spent the final week of May exploring Athens and its surrounding areas, including Delphi. The group will continue their journey in June to Egypt, India, and Japan.

SURF

Summer Undergraduate Research in Florence

Each summer, students studying biochemistry are offered a chance to visit Florence, Italy. They spend a month conducting research to fulfill course requirements at a research hospital close by, while also exploring various parts of Italy. The current group of students arrived in Italy on May 23rd and they have already joined the HUF group on a few tours.
