Despite the sad news this last week of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it is tribute to her that several schools in South Yorkshire have already planted trees as part of the Queen's Green Canopy, a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation which will benefit future generations.

Schools, villages, cities and individuals are still encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022.

In view of the hottest day on record in the UK on July 19th this year, and the recent news that a staggering one third of Pakistan was underwater due to flooding exacerbated by climate change, this event is of great importance!

It will be taking place at King Edward VII School, Sheffield on Thursday, 20th October (just five weeks away!). Speakers include nationally recognized climate spokespeople Chris Packham and Megan McCubbin.

Up to ten students from Y10-Y13 from each school will be able to participate - perfect for a school Ecogroup! (Make sure you get your headteacher's support to attend!)

Help can be sought from the organisers in overcoming barriers to your students attending.

If any of your students have family who are experiencing the trauma of being on the frontline of climate change, such as the recent flooding in Pakistan, we would like to hear from you. At our conference in March we want to raise awareness of the fact that such issues may be very close to home for many families living in South Yorkshire. How should climate change be taught in schools? Hear Clive Belgeonne talk about the exciting approach being developed in Sheffield. Learn Sheffield's aim is that all teachers will be confident to teach about the climate and nature emergencies by 2030.

This event was originally scheduled to be on 19th July, but had to be postponed due to the extreme heat event in the UK on that day.
