As shared in last week’s DER Newsletter, the College of Engineering will host a four-part 2022 NSF CAREER Award Series to assist faculty in generating strong, fundable CAREER proposals. This series will be led by Dr. John Verboncoeur and Dr. Robert Ofoli. Please see the email request from Dr. Ofoli regarding participation as an NSF CAREER applicant, or as a seasoned faculty who may assist new faculty applying for this valuable opportunity. This funding opportunity closes July 25, 2022.
Dear Colleagues,
Good afternoon. Dr. John Verboncoeur and I will run four sessions to support all engineering faculty who are planning to submit CAREER Award proposals this year. I am aware that most of you receiving this message are not planning to submit CAREER proposals yourselves. However, many of you serve as mentors to our young faculty members, and even more of you are in a position to help them by reviewing proposals to enhance their chances of funding.
Here are the four sessions we plan to run in support of proposal preparation:
Session 1 (2-3 h; Last week of March): John V. will lead a broadly-based discussion of the competition format, along with best practices and strategies for producing successful proposals. The session will also include presentations by previous CAREER award winners, and others around campus.
Session 2 (2-3 h; Last week of April): We will provide an opportunity for each proposer to pitch his/her CAREER proposal project. In particular, we would like proposers to address the potential of the proposed activity to a) advance knowledge and understanding within his/her own field or across different fields (Intellectual Merit); b) benefit society or advance desired societal outcomes (Broader Impacts); and c) demonstrate how the proposed set of activities will serve as a springboard for the faculty member’s career. A panel of reviewers will evaluate the presentations and provide input for all proposers.
Session 3 (Last week of May): Subject-matter and general review and assessment of proposal drafts.
Session 4 (Last week of June): Subject-matter and general review of near-complete proposals. We will arrange for VPRI to help facilitate this activity.
Please email me directly (Robert Y. Ofoli ofoli@egr.msu.edu) if you are a faculty member:
- planning to submit a CAREER proposal this year
- who has (or had) a funded CAREER project, and would like to participate in any of the four sessions
- in a position to provide timely reviews of proposals.
Also, to help us schedule the first workshop session, please visit https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/qaQ2kL7b/vote and fill in the doodle poll as soon as you can. Please let me know if you have questions or need more information. Thank you.
