Incredible Beginnings® (IB) was added to the suite of Incredible Years programs offered in Rhode Island in 2017, with the goal of providing professional development that would help to improve the quality of early childhood education in Rhode Island.

Our incredible Mentor in Rhode Island, Stephanie Shepard Umaschi, PhD, has recently shared with us an update on the implementation of the Incredible Beginnings® program in Rhode Island.

This program, for early years teachers and child care providers, is designed to promote positive teaching strategies for children ages 1 to 5 years. The program topics focus on ways preschool and day care providers can provide an environment that promotes optimal development of children’s social competence, emotion literacy, self-regulation, and sense of security and attachment, as well as early problem solving and academic readiness skills. Providers learn positive behavior management strategies, as well as developmentally appropriate strategies to support children with language and developmental delays.

When helping parents and teachers learn key principles for for strengthening positive behaviors, it can be useful for them to see these as “building tools” they are learning to use from their tool kit.

Parent and Teacher group leaders can use our individual, editable tool awards cards to celebrate parents’ and teachers' successes as they master the use of each tool. Group leaders can fill in parents’ or teachers' names and print out or email the tool awards. For example: Leon’s social coaching award or Matilda’s emotion coaching award.
