Dear Reader,

August 7 is Lighthouse Day, and you, my readers, truly do light up my life. I was absolutely delighted by the number of readers who sent in photos of lighthouses over the past week. Thank you! I created the town of Lighthouse Cove in homage to these beautiful buildings. They do more than save lives; they enhance our lives. I’ll announce the winners of the Lighthouse Cove night-lights later on in the newsletter, but first I wanted to share a sampling of the more than 100 photos that were submitted, and a few interesting facts.

Several readers mentioned that the state with the greatest number of lighthouses is Michigan. According to the United States Lighthouse Society (USLHS), Michigan has about 140 lighthouses, followed by Maine with about 80.

The first lighthouse in America was at Boston on Little Brewster Island (1716). The first keeper was George Worthylake who was drowned, along with his wife and daughter, when returning to the island in 1718. This and many other fascinating, surprising, and sometimes tragic facts about the history of lighthouses can be discovered at the USLHS website.
