Welcome to the latest edition of OpenMinds e-News! As we dive into summer, I'm reminded of Henry James' words, "Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language." It's a season of warmth and growth, much like the incredible initiatives we're highlighting in this edition.
Our University Giving Day is when we see how our collective efforts can create ripples of change and it’s back!

Researchers use NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to map weather on a planet 280 light-years away
An international team of researchers, including The Open University’s Dr Joanna Barstow, have successfully used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to map the weather on the hot gas-giant exoplanet WASP-43 b.
Precise brightness measurements over a broad spectrum of mid-infrared light, combined with 3D climate models and previous observations from other telescopes, suggest the presence of thick, high clouds covering the nightside, clear skies on the dayside, and equatorial winds upwards of 5,000 miles per hour mixing atmospheric gases around the planet.

New project launched to train dogs in early diagnosis of bowel cancer
A new project, supported by academics from The Open University, is to train dogs in the detection of colorectal (bowel) cancer in urine samples, using the power of their noses.
The charity, Medical Detection Dogs, is looking into whether man’s best friend could help deliver an accurate, non-invasive and more sensitive method of early stage bowel cancer detection that could both increase uptake of the screening and improve health outcomes.
This project is led by OU Professor Clara Mancini. You are invited to join her Inaugural Lecture on 20 June. See further down for more information.

Introducing Chloe, one of the OU's youngest students ever
After completing her GCSEs, Chloe had a big decision to make – go on to achieve A-Levels as expected or follow her heart by choosing another path.
Craving a more enriching learning experience away from the “incessant emphasis” on exam practice she’d experienced at school, Chloe chose to fast-track her university journey and career by starting an Arts and Humanities degree at The Open University at just 16 years old!
Chloe shares how she’s using the skills she learned in her rewarding role at a busy NHS hospital, while pursuing her dreams as a writer.

Introducing Althea
The Care Experienced Scholarship was launched in 2023 in collaboration with the John Lewis Partnership. The Fund offers full undergraduate scholarships to young people aged 25 and under, who have spent time in care and face significant barriers to entering and succeeding in higher education. The University works closely with the John Lewis Partnership and their ‘Building Happier Futures’ programme, which looks to support, harness the talent, and improve the lives of young people who have grown up in care. You can read how it has changed the life of Althea (pictured) below.
The window for applying for a Care Experienced Scholarship is currently open until 24 July, and this year we aim to offer at least six scholarships.
Please do spread the word on these life-changing scholarships.
