THE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY
Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers.
During that first national commemoration, former Union Gen. and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there.
This national event galvanized efforts to honor and remember fallen soldiers that began with local observances at burial grounds in several towns throughout the United States following the end of the Civil War, such as the May 1, 1865 gathering in Charleston, South Carolina organized by freed slaves to pay tribute and give proper burial to Union troops.
In 1873, New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. By the late 1800s, many more cities and communities observed Memorial Day, and several states had declared it a legal holiday.
After World War I, it became an occasion for honoring those who died in all of America’s wars and was then more widely established as a national holiday throughout the United States.
In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established that Memorial Day was to be commemorated on the last Monday of May.
Memorial Day is commemorated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service. This morning we look at several Bible verses that focus on themes of sacrifice, hope, peace, and eternal life which can offer profound comfort and perspective.
Sacrifice And Love
John 15:13 teaches…"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
This verse epitomizes the ultimate sacrifice, mirroring the selfless act of Jesus Christ for humanity. It honors those who have laid down their lives in service to others, highlighting the depth of their love and devotion.
And 1 John 3:16 Says…"By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers."
Reflecting on Christ's sacrifice, this verse calls us to emulate His example of love through self-sacrifice, acknowledging the noble act of giving one’s life for the sake of others.
Hope and Resurrection
Romans 8:38-39 States…"For I Am Sure That Neither Death Nor Life, Nor Angels Nor Rulers, Nor Things Present Nor Things To Come, Nor Powers, Nor Height Nor Depth, Nor Anything Else In All Creation, Will Be Able To Separate Us From The Love Of God In Christ Jesus Our Lord."
In this scripture, the apostle Paul assures us of the unbreakable bond of God’s Love, transcending even death. It’s a profound reminder of God’s eternal love for those who have passed away and for those who grieve.
Peace And Comfort
Philippians 4:7 Assures Us… "And The Peace Of God, Which Surpasses All Understanding, Will Guard Your Hearts And Your Minds In Christ Jesus."
This passage speaks to the transcendent peace that God offers to those who are in Christ, a peace that protects and comforts the heart and mind amid life's most challenging circumstances.
Eternal Life and Glory
2 Corinthians 4:17-18 Promises…"For This Light Momentary Affliction Is Preparing For Us An Eternal Weight Of Glory Beyond All Comparison, As We Look Not To The Things That Are Seen But To The Things That Are Unseen. For The Things That Are Seen Are Transient, But The Things That Are Unseen Are Eternal."
This passage offers a heavenly perspective on earthly suffering, suggesting that our present hardships are preparing us for an incomparable eternal glory.
Joshua 1:9 Reminds Us…"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
To God Be The Glory…for this scripture which is a call to courage and faith. This verse reminds us of God’s omnipresent support, encouraging believers to face every challenge with the confidence that they are never alone. Go Bless our fallen soldiers and all who serve in the military! May we never forget that freedom isn’t free. In memory of many…in memory of ALL!

TACO PIE
- 1 small white onion, chopped
- 1 pound lean ground turkey or ground beef
- 3 tablespoons reduced-sodium taco seasoning
- 1 can (15 ounces) unsalted tomato sauce
- 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 2 (8 inch) whole-wheat tortillas
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
Optional: serve with taco toppings such as salsa, cilantro, jalapeno, onion, low-fat sour cream
- Wash hands with warm water and soap, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
- Wash fresh produce under cool running water, using a vegetable brush to scrub veggies with a firm surface. Dry and cut to prepare for this recipe.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Over medium-high heat, add onion to a large skillet. Sauté 1-2 minutes until slightly softened.
- Lower the heat to medium. Add ground turkey to the skillet, allow it to fully cook and reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F using a food thermometer, about 7 to 8 minutes.
- To the skillet, add taco seasoning, tomato sauce, and black beans. Stir to combine and allow to simmer for about 2 to 3 minutes until heated through. Remove from heat.
- Using a 9-inch round glass baking dish, add one-third of the meat mixture. Place one tortilla on top of mixture. Next, add the same amount of meat mixture. Place the second tortilla on top of mixture. Finally, add the remaining meat mixture on top of tortilla.
- Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven, top with cheese and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
- For best results, allow it to cool 5 minutes before serving. Slice and serve alone or with your favorite taco toppings.
- Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.

FLU
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.
RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.
RSV shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a RSV vaccination.
COVID-19
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.
The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
Both COVID vaccines and Booster COVID vaccines are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding COVID vaccinations.
