G16 School District | Outdoor Education Department
Things have been super busy at Garfield 16! Below are a few of the highlights.
The September outdoor Staff MeetUp at Grand Mesa brought teachers together throughout the district to hike, eat and get an opportunity to connect to one another while checking out the early Fall colors.
The BUE 4th grade class also took a trip out to the Mesa to Lands End where students explored the Fall scenery and connected the geologic natural features of the once massive volcano that blew its top millions of years ago.
The GVHS Outdoor Club went fly fishing at the Grand Mesa. Students had time to practice fly casting and learn about entomology guided by Peter Golden, fly fishing extraordinary and teacher at GVHS. Both students and sponsors had a wonderful time getting on the water and soaking in the photogenic landscape.
On October 21st, the GVMS 8th-grade class got to explore the erosion events that caused the formation of Rifle Arch. Students got to hike the trail to the arch with their teachers. They also gained some local knowledge by going to the Rifle Heritage museum. The museum coordinators took students on a tour to imagine life in a time before cell phones.
We are also bringing back archery in the schools by working with PE programs throughout Garfield 16 and RE-2. Both Coal Ridge High school and Grand Valley Middle School students took aim and let arrows fly to the bullseye with support from Garfield County Outdoors partner Dani Wesoloski, from CSU Extension. We're excited to see the NASP archery program making its way back to schools. If students are interested in continuing their shooting skills, we encourage families to check out the Garfield 4-H Shoot Sports for more opportunities to get involved.
