It's getting close to that time of year again where we hold our Annual General Meeting.  There's more about this below.

We've extended the end date for Early Bird ticket sales to the Summer Solstice Festival (YAY!), so you still have a couple of weeks to grab tickets at the special price.

The Youth Education program is going strong, and tickets are now on sale for the next round of Earth Kids programs.  The Farm is buzzing during the week with families joining in the activities at Earth Arts and new families are always welcome.

The Adult Education has an interesting range of workshops including some new options such as Building Rocket Stoves.

Remember too, to get your votes in for the Market in this year's Organic Consumers Choice Awards.  Voting closes next week.

AGM 

11.00 am Saturday 5 November 2022 

Current members are invited to come together for Northey Street City Farm's Annual General Meeting (AGM) followed by a shared lunch. Please bring a plate to share, we’ll provide beverages. 

The following positions will be up for election this year:  Secretary plus 2 General members 

If you are interested in nominating yourself or another current Farm member for a position on the Management Committee (MC), now is a good time to do so. All nominations need to be displayed in the office for at least two weeks prior to the AGM (making them due before 28 October 2022, for the AGM on 5 November).  

 The nomination form can be downloaded from the NSCF website HERE, along with information about the roles and responsibilities of the MC.   All new MC members will be required to sign two documents at the AGM, prior to their acceptance as an MC member: the MC Code-of-conduct and a Declaration of Legal Qualification form. 

 If you have been nominated, you are also invited to submit a brief statement (up to 150 words) introducing yourself to the farm’s members as an MC nominee.  Any statements received will be displayed in the office prior to the AGM. 

FEATURED WORKSHOP

Rocket Stoves

with Tim Barker

Saturday 15 October, 9 am to 4 pm

Rocket stoves are simply the best value for money.  They are efficient wood stoves which are also cheap and simple to make.

Say goodbye to wood gobbling, slow to heat, backyard, pizza ovens, and add a super efficient, fast to heat rocket stove to your life.

Come join Tim Barker as we explore the mysteries of rocket stoves. The emphasis of this workshop will be on the construction of rocket stoves for practical applications using recycled materials.

By the end of this workshop, you will have all the information you need to build an oven that can reach over 500 C in 15 mins with a handful of sticks as fuel.

Tim is perennially ash and grease stained! He is an appropriate technology tinkerer with a professional mechanical background. A long time Permaculture practitioner in the past, he has worked at PRI Australia as farm manager and teacher, with The Koanga Institute in NZ, Paul Wheatons rocket mass innovators events in the US, and with long-time friends the crew at Very Edible Gardens (VEG) in Melbourne where he teaches two or three times a year. 

He has a Permaculture diploma in Appropriate technology with a specialty in efficient wood combustion.

Earth Kids

The Term 4 Homeschool Program is running from Wednesday October 26th to November 30th.  Single session tickets are available.

The Summer Earth Kids School Holiday Program is running from December 13th to 15th. Earlybird tickets are available until November 20th.

Parent volunteer places are available, with discounted tickets for their children for both Earth Kids programs. Part-scholarship places are also available for parents holding Health Care Cards. Contact Emma at education@nscf.org.au if you are interested in these options.

Tours and School Visits

We are taking bookings for tours and school visits for 2022. As bookings are not paid for until after each visit, there is no financial commitment to make a tentative booking.

We run free farm tours on Tuesday mornings for groups of 4 to 8 by arrangement only. This is a great way to learn more about Northey Street City Farm. Please contact Ronni: educationandsupport.mgr@nscf.org.au if you would like to arrange a guided tour.

We also have a free farm tour for individuals on the first Tuesday of each month. Please arrive by 9:30 am at Chai Cafe to meet your tour guide.

There is still so much transformational energy needed to address the climate crisis and for us all to live in peace and harmony with each other.

The summer solstice, also known as midsummer, is the day when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and has the longest period of daylight.  Many cultures give Fire powerful symbolism, from the first light in creation stories, to our inner fire of divinity, passion and power. It is a creation, destruction and transformational energy.

AFSA Food Sovereignty Convergence: 2022

Are you keen to get involved in food sovereignty, working towards socially-just and ecologically sound food systems for all? 

AFSA is holding its annual Food Sovereignty Convergence at Echo Valley Farms on Bundjalung Country (Goomburra, QLD) on 17-18 October. 

This is a space where Australia's food sovereignty movement comes together to debate, collaborate, share and strategise to advance food sovereignty and an agroecological transition in Australia, as well as build the movement for the future. 

This event is open to all, so feel free to share widely with your friends and networks!

The Farm does not rely on government funding for its operations. We operate as a social enterprise running the City Farm Nursery, Sunday Organic Farmers Market, and Permaculture Education.  We appreciate the financial support of our community, if you are able please donate by visiting our website.  

We also have an Australian First Nations Scholarship Fund and if you wish to donate to this please donate HERE and then contact Adnan, E: finance@nscf.org.au to confirm this is where you would like your donation to go.

Pay-It-Forward plant program.  Donate any amount to this program to add to the collection of native plants we will donate to First Nations groups on your behalf.

VOLUNTEERS

You can get involved with our vibrant Farm community by becoming a volunteer.  Volunteer areas include farming, nursery, construction, and kitchen.  We also occasionally need people with professional or trade skills (even off-site help, if you can’t get to the farm): building, electrical, plumbing, welding, accounting, legal, to name a few.
