Covid-19 featured in this year’s Gender Equality Index

The 2021 Gender Equality Index will take a close look at health and the different challenges faced by women and men. We will cover mental health, sexual and reproductive health and pandemics – in particular Covid-19. The report will point out gender inequalities and policy measures to tackle them. FGM study: More girls at risk but community opposition growing

EIGE calculated the number of girls at risk of FGM in Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg and Spain. Findings show that while the total number of girls at risk has risen in Austria, Luxembourg and Spain, the share of girls at particularly high of FGM risk has fallen due to changes in the countries of origin of migrants. There are now risk estimation for 13 EU-member states. You can find out more here.

Gender inequality in care and work

EIGE has published a report that explores the links between the unequal division of un­paid care in households and gender inequality at work. The analysis aims to contribute to important policy discussions on persistent gender gaps in unpaid care, pay and the labour market. The report was prepared on the request of the German gouvernment. Updates to Covid-19 information on website

For International Women’s Day we plan to update the section on Covid-19 and gender equality on our website. We will have new information from EIGE’s latest research. Topics include gender-based violence, economic consequences and unpaid care. As the pandemic continues to unfold, we will keep you updated. You can read more about Covid-19 and gender equality here.

EU Commission consultation on domestic violence

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the best ways to tackle domestic and gender-based violence. Anyone can participate, from the general public to academics and representatives of businesses, employees, NGOs, media organisations and public authorities. You can add your voice here.

Let’s talk gender

February definition: Economic violence.


This refers to any act or behaviour which causes financial harm to an individual. Economic violence can take many forms such as property damage, restricting access to financial resources, education or work as well as not complying with economic responsibilities, such as child support. You can find more terms in our Glossary and Thesaurus here.

If you have a very good understanding of gender equality or social statistics, experience in data analysis and research management, as well as the ability to apply advanced methods of statistical analysis, apply here before 22 February, 13:30 EET.

Call for tender – GEAR tool

EIGE is looking for a contractor to carry out an update of the Gender Equality in Academia and Research (GEAR) tool. The work involves an identification of policy and legal developments since 2015 related to gender mainstreaming in the area of research, so that it aligns with Horizon Europe’s provisions. Apply here before 26 March 2021, 12:00 EET.
