"When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight.
They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the Scriptures to us?""

Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, April 23 |
|
|
|
To the parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints –
"Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
“The Road to Emmaus” … should really be called “The Road back to Jerusalem”
Experience seems to confirm for us that all sorrows and tragedies can be bourne if we have someone who is willing to listen to our story. The two disciples, walking on the road to Emmaus, has a very sad story to tell. The death of Jesus had plunged them into gloom. All their hopes and dreams for the “long-awaited Messiah” had been reduced to rubble … and they were walking away from it all. A humiliated, crucified Messiah! It was impossible! It was unthinkable!
And then it happened … again. Jesus joins them “as a stranger”, open to listen and patiently accept their deep-seeded plight. Only when the disciples had finished did Jesus begin to talk. Jesus took up the story where they had left off; he opened their minds to a new way of looking at the Scriptures. He described to them how all the prophets had foretold that the Messiah would suffer and die, and thus, enter into glory.
Their story is “our story” – no one can attain the “glory of God” except through sacrifice and suffering. May our Easter journey be an opportunity for each of us to live: the Way, the Truth and the Life. The death of Jesus, far from being the end of the dream, was precisely the way in which we can live the fullness of today, so as to enjoy the fullness of Eternal Life.
The challenge for each of us is not to walk away from “the Source of Life” (the graces of the Risen Lord), but to quickly return to Jerusalem – “There they found the twelve and their companions gathered together. These were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon! Then the two disciples told them what had happened on the road, and how the Lord had been known to them in the breaking of the bread.” (Luke 24: 34-35)
May we live truly live today as Resurrection people … as we recognize our Risen Lord “in the breaking of the bread”.
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
God is good … all the time.
Fr. Mike Dechant OMI

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Hi, Everyone!
Well - just when we (and our tough little early perennials) thought we were in the clear and headed full-on into spring, with the winter coats, boots, snow shovels and windshield scrapers all put away for another year, we get all this snow! Back we go, into a white, wintery world! Thankfully the temperatures have remained fairly mild, and are continuing to climb, so we should see this crazy accumulation disappear within a few days. I'm sure all the extra "moisture" will be appreciated by our lawns, gardens, flowers, and fields in a few months from now, so there's something to be grateful for amid this unexpected weather curve-ball!
Now, let's see what's coming up in our Parish and around our Diocese as we head into the last week of April (already!):
- Are you doing some spring cleaning? Yes - believe it or not, it IS Spring! Our Refugee Committee is looking for some furniture items due to having to relocate our refugee family. Please see the details below to see how you may be able to help out!

This is also your final reminder about the "Continuing the Walk" event happening THIS Sat. April 22 over at St. Mary Parish - those details remain below.
- In a few weeks from now, our St. Philip Neri Knights of Columbus are generously giving each of us another new book, called Holy Moments. We can all use a few more Holy Moments in our lives! Scroll down below to learn more about this great little book and how we can all be more aware of the Holy Moments that are happening in our lives every day, and what they might mean!

- On May 6/7, after both weekend Masses, it will once again be Timbit Time in the Welcome Area! Be sure to stop by and enjoy some yummy Timbits and juice, supplied by our K of C, and juice. More details are below.

- The Bereavement Support group will be resuming their meetings THIS Tuesday, April 25, from 1-3 pm. Please scroll down for more information.

- Finally, one last yummy announcement! St. Joseph's Parish is hosting their montly pancake breakfast THIS Sunday, April 23 over in their hall. All the delicious details remain below.
That's it for this week, my friends! It will be SO fun to watch the rest of this ridiculous snow melt (again), and for the mercury to climb back into the double digits by mid week. Bring it on! The NHL hockey playoffs continue to entertain and/or frustrate us, depending on the night, and I can't wait to see the kids back out on the ball diamonds and soccer pitches - a sure sign that Spring is here to stay! Have a wonderful weekend everyone, and talk to you next week!
(For real this time) Spring blessings,
Marlene
