Welcome, loyal newsletter readers, to a new week. I don’t know about you, but I sure needed the weekend to recuperate from last week.
And by last week, I mean Friday.
Of course it all started with the Iowa Supreme Court’s huge ruling on abortion. The court’s decision essentially undoes its 2019 ruling that declared abortion a fundamental right. It also makes a pending U.S. Supreme Court ruling on abortion even more important. If the federal court overturns Roe v. Wade — as a recently leaked draft suggested it might — then statehouse Republicans will be clear to write into law any abortion restriction or outright ban they like.
Later Friday, we learned that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deidre DeJear had selected Clinton County auditor Eric Van Lancker as her running mate. So for Iowa governor in 2022 it’s Kim Reynolds and Adam Gregg against DeJear and Van Lancker.
A little after that, Reynolds unveiled a new batch of bill-signings. There were myriad headline-worthy moves in this latest round:
What a week that was on Friday.
And if you missed it over the weekend, check out my story on a new state law that addresses pharmacy benefits managers in state lawmakers’ attempts to rein in prescription drug prices. It’s a complicated issue but one that impacts so many Iowans. Hopefully the story does a decent job of describing a complex issue and the myriad ways legislators tried to address it.
