Throughout the Bible we see fathers portrayed as seeking God's guidance and wisdom in their leadership roles within their families. Meet King David.
The Bible reveals that David was many things in life. A shepherd, giant killer, folk hero, singer, songwriter, warrior, fugitive, exile, and eventually a king.
Acts 13:22 reads, “After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’
David loved the Lord and loved his children, but he too made mistakes, failed in many areas as a parent, and cried out to God for wisdom and forgiveness throughout his life.
The Bible records at least twenty named children born to David and his many wives, though it is possible he had even more than those listed.
In 1 Chronicles 29:19 we learn of King David praying for his son Solomon and for the construction of the temple. It reads, “And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion to keep your commands, statutes and decrees and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I have provided.”
As David's life on earth came to an end, God chose Solomon to succeed David as king of Israel. Not only would God grant Solomon favor in the form of wisdom, riches, and long life, God would honor His promise to David by allowing Solomon to finish the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. 1 King 6:9 says, So he built the temple and completed it.”
Attributed to Solomon, (and perhaps a nod to his dad who prepared him to become King), Proverbs 22:6 advises, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
To God Be The Glory for King David. Although David was not a perfect father, he was still a man after God's own heart who loved God and loved his children. More importantly, God's mercy and promise to David remained true.
