What's it all about?
Well in a nutshell, which crime novels are the best reads of 2022? No less than seven top critics and crime writers have submitted their top 5 choices for your consideration, for your delectation or will it be approbation. Will your favourites be on our lists, have you even had time to think about your book of the year yet? Of course, if the one you love is not on our list you can have your own say on the night via the comments column. Questions about issues in crime fiction are also very welcome.
That's getting a little ahead of the game though, I haven't filled you in on the line-up yet. So resisting the temptation to label this event the re-Return of the Magnificent Seven or even The Clash Of The Titans, we do have some stellar pundits for you. Crime Time's editor Barry Forshaw will chair, ensuring, as last year, that everyone gets a say and that we get through the long list of books nominated. There'll be a few hot crime fiction topics for the panel to mull over and the odd curve balls to keep them on their toes. Barry, the Financial Times crime fiction critic and author of SIMENON: The Man, The Books, the Films, will have his hands full with our rambunctious panel but if anyone can keep good order he's the man.
Our experts include legendary novelist, publisher and Crime Time To The Max columnist Maxim Jakubowski. Guardian crime fiction critic Laura Wilson is an award winning writer of psychological thrillers and her first YA novel, Monochrome (Jamie Costello) came out in October. Then there are two of the most insightful and influential critic/reviewers in Britain, Jake Kerridge of the Telegraph and Ayo Onatade of ShotsBlog. Sunday Times bestselling author of Truly Darkly Deeply and Crime Time co-host, Victoria Selman is dying to share her favourites and bringing up the rear is Paul Burke, host of In Person With Paul on Crime Time FM, where authors chat about their latest books.
Barry, always well prepared, is keeping the debate topics close to his chest and the panellists are all busily planning how best to sabotage each others choices, okay that might be an exaggeration but it will be lively. Meanwhile, I've got my finger on the pulse on the live wire issue of the evening - what to drink! A G&T, a craft beer, perhaps gluhwein or a glass of Chateau Petrus, Pomerol, 1961. Okay there's not much of the latter in the cellar right now but there's still time to win the lottery in the countdown to the debate.
See you there.
