UPCOMING EVENTS

ESG Reporting and Due Diligence E-course (Second Edition in Portuguese)

Following the success of the first edition, we are pleased to announce the launch of the second edition of the Portuguese-language course on ESG Reporting and Due Diligence. This course is organized by the NOVA Centre on Business, Human Rights, and the Environment (NOVA BHRE) in partnership with the NOVA Green Lab.

This training will address the challenges and opportunities in implementing corporate practices that align policies and strategies with ESG criteria, considering the evolving legislative requirements on ESG matters.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of corporate sustainability practices that uphold human rights and environmental standards across business operations and global supply chains.

KEY EVENTS

On the 5th December 2024 the NOVA BHRE Centre participated in the fourth edition of the ESG Portugal Forum, as Claire Bright took part in a round table discussion on the implementation of due diligence across different sectors.
The Event was organized by PLMJ, ECO and Capital Verde, and brought together leaders from business, academia, legal practice and policymakers to discuss the role of ESG in shaping strategies to transition to a green economy.
There were several insightful panels addressing some of the most pressing challenges and opportunities in relation to green transition. António Costa (ECO), Bruno Ferreira (PMLJ) and João Rui Ferreira (Portuguese Secretary of State for Economy) opened the event which was followed by roundtable discussions on:

Sustainable Financing and Investment, a topic explored by Celina Carrigy, Nuno Rosário, Bruno Ferreira, and Joana Carvalho, and moderated by Andre Verissimo.
Due Diligence, discussed by Claire Bright, Cláudia Coelho, Marcio Cruz, and Madalena Perestrelo de Oliveira, moderated by Ana Batalha Oliveira.

On the 3rd December 2024 our Founding Director, Claire Bright, was awarded two prizes at the NOVA Science & Innovation Day for the impact of her research and contribution to the field of Business and Human Rights, and in particular:

an Honorary Mention at the Research Impact Narratives Challenge for the impact of her work on Business and Human Rights on key legislative and policy developments at national level in various European countries and in Africa, as well as at the European level.

an Award in the "Publications with Impact" Category, rewarding the scientific publications with the highest Field-Weighted Citation Impact during the 2021-2023 for the Commentary that she co-wrote together with our Research Associate Céline da Graça Pires on Guiding Principle 18 of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights on the identification and assessment of actual and potential adverse human rights risks.

On 12th December 2024, the NOVA BHRE was at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), where Claire Bright and Anaïs Tobalagba participated in the workshop titled 'Comparing National Supply Chains Laws for Human Rights: From the UN Guiding Principles to Corporate Practices'. During the event, Claire and Anaïs presented their paper, which focused on lessons learned from the French Duty of Vigilance Law. They also discussed the amendments needed to the French law in light of the transposition of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.

The panel on European Mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence featured insightful contributions, including discussions on the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act by Andreas Rühmkorf and Alina Ganser, as well as the Norwegian Transparency Act by Victoria Skeie. The session was chaired by Dr. Irene Pietropaoli.

PODCASTS

The NOVA BHRE Centre released a new podcast episode featuring a panel of experts in Portugal to discuss Corporate Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence Directive.

The episode explores the challenges and opportunities arising from the transposition of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D).

The podcast was coordinated by Luis Prata e Castro, a Master's student and Research Associate at the NOVA BHRE Centre. The interview was conducted by Maria Folque, a social innovation expert and partner as well as a member of the advisory board of Class of Wonders. The podcast featured Ângela Lucas, founding partner, board member, and executive director of the sustainable investment initiative, the LAND Fund, and Rita Rendeiro, partner at CCSL Advogados, where she leads the finance, regulatory, and sustainability practice.
