Online art, music, events and entertainment in Penang

MCO is back from Wednesday January 13th, so all in-person activities are cancelled for at least the next 2 weeks and possibly longer.

As during the previous MCO you can expect to see a lot of activities moving (back) online. Just a handful are listed this week, but many more are being planned. If you haven’t already, do sign up for the Spiral Synergy mailing list too ( as they will be organising online events and activities throughout the MCO period.

MUSIC - NOON RECITAL, Online, Wednesday January 13th 12pm

Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music offers weekly short online recitals you its students. This week you can enjoy Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, Scriabin’s Fantasy in B minor and York Bowen’s Horn Concerto. The free of charge online screening can be watched on Youtube here.


A Colloquium to identify the unique aspects of the Penang Straits Chinese culture and heritage, stressing the importance of maintaining differentiation in order to retain a unique cultural identity differing from that of the other Peranakan Chinese communities. Speakers come from academia and elsewhere. Prior registration is compulsory.

ACRYLIC PAINTING WORKSHOP, Online, Saturday January 16th 3pm

MUSIC - THE TROUT BY SCHUBERT, Online, Monday 18th January 12.15pm-1.15pm

Students from Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory perform Schubert’s Trout Quintet. Schubert uses music to portray the image of a little trout swimming in the water, its explorative adventures with nature,  and the pastoral and rustic qualities of countryside life. It will be live-streamed free of charge on YouTube here.

MUSIC - MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE OF ARTS CONCERT, Online, Saturday 24th January 8pm

A virtual concert by students from The Malaysian Institute of Arts Music Faculty in KL. It will be live-streamed on Facebook here. Free of charge.

MUSIC PRACTICE PLANNING WORKSHOP, Online, Sunday 24th January 8pm

Low Wen Hong, bass trombonist of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra of Finland, explains strategies for making the most efficient use of your limited practice time.

MUSIC - AFTERNOON TEA CONCERT, Suffolk House, Sunday January 31st 2.30pm

Listen to a concert of chamber music while enjoying afternoon tea  in the elegance of the Marble Hall at Suffolk House. Chamber music by Mozart, Haydn and Telemann will be performed by the Mostly Mozart Quartet and the Totally Telemann Trio.

MUSIC - BLOSSOMING, Jetty 35, Weld Quay, Sunday February 28th 3pm

Blossoming, brings together music and drawing, and music and yoga in a unique programme. In the aftermath of her ordeal with domestic violence, local artist Prabh Lahari found freedom of expression through the arts to portray the insights she gained through that difficult period of time and the time after. Her artwork will be accompanied by music exclusively composed by local composer Lawrence Chiu.

Early bird tickets at RM 40 are available to purchase here. At the end of January the ticket price will become RM 60.


WATERCOLOUR ART AUCTION, Online, First & Third Week of the Month

An online exhibition venue For the paintings of the members of the Penang Water Colour Society. All are welcome to join the Facebook group here to view and purchase artworks, and participate in the twice monthly online auction.
