Mead Way will open to traffic today, as extensive work to increase the capacity of the road is nearing completion.
The contractor for the scheme, Britannia Construction Ltd, has over the last two weeks finished the kerbing and has laid the new road surface. This followed weeks of carefully widening of the road which has now finished. The foundation of the road has been constructed with several robust layers. This followed the diversion of a number of utility cables, pipes and ducts a few weeks earlier.
Stonehill Green will also reopen and full access will be restored.
Traffic lights were also tested and found to be fully operational and ready for the road's reopening. The roundabout at Westmead Drive and Stonehill Green junction has been converted into a signalised crossroad junction with a toucan crossing for pedestrians to cross Westmead Drive.
This vital work was required as the area around Mead Way has expanded and subsequently the amount of traffic using the road has also increased. The completion of the scheme will see congestion ease on Great Western Way and along the whole Great Western Way corridor, mainly in the afternoon peak period. The work has also complemented the upgraded signals at Mead roundabout and will reduce the congestion at the junction as the signalised junction will allow traffic to flow better past Westmead in the morning peak period.
