General news outlets are finally warning of something regular readers of Financial Poise have been warned about for about the last 12 months: rising inflation, which will not reverse anytime soon, for nearly a year. Where should money be invested in a high inflation environment? While there is no one answer, real estate has historically served as a solid hedge against inflation. If you want to consider this strategy, read A Diversified Real Estate Portfolio is Sound Investment Strategy by Tracy Treger.
There are no financial crystal balls
If you are reading this because it was forwarded to you by a friend, and if you want to read about financial news after it happens so you can be reactive, then don’t subscribe. But if you want to be proactive and make smart moves before events happen that will impact your finances, subscribe to Financial Poise (it’s currently free and will remain free for life to those who subscribe before we start charging for it). We don’t have a crystal ball but we do make some pretty sound predictions. For example:
From the March 11th issue - "The Wall Street Journal’s take last night on the $1.9 million COVID relief package was on the mark: it will help propel the U.S. economy to its fastest annual growth in nearly four decades, reduce poverty and revive inflation. [T]ake heed of that bit about rising inflation when deploying your investment capital.”
From the June 24th issue - “Inflation is here and it will be increasing.”
Today’s prediction - Inflation will continue unabated for some time to come, and certainly into 2023. This will help contribute to more business failures in the U.S. as compared to the last few years.
The role of a company’s board of directors includes strategic planning, succession planning, capital structure, and enterprise risk management. If you own a company of significant size (or one you want to grow to a significant size) that doesn’t have a formal, working board that consists of at least one outsider, we recommend Bruce Werner’s most recent Financial Poise article, What is the ROI for a Private Company Board of Directors, as a good starting point to consider whether now is the time to form one.
