Make money playing real mini-golf courses...at home

There's an app called OneShot Golf that allows you to control real robo-powered mini-golf putters, on real mini-golf courses, from your phone.

And it's just as cool as it sounds.

I finally got around to trying it this week, and although it's way harder than I expected, it's really fun.

There are real world prizes involved too. You can earn gift cards and physical goods like stickers, clothes, and more, just for playing and earning points.

Best of all, the app is free to use. Although you can pay if you'd like, you get 1 free play each day, and then another 2 free plays after playing your first free round, for a total of 3 free plays per day.

This is probably one of the coolest things I've seen come out of the restriction-filled world we're currently living in.

If you're interested, you can learn more about the game here. It's currently only available in North America, but they're looking to expand internationally in the future.

Appen Follow-Up

I published and shared my full Appen review and guide in last weeks newsletter and it got a good number of clicks.

So my question is:

How many of you signed up and made some money (or at least tried)? Hit reply and let me know how your experience went.

Business Ideas and Stories 💼

Swift Salary Q4 2021 Income Report

I just published my Q4 report for Swift Salary. Total revenue for Q4 was $15,589.37.

If you're interested in seeing more detail on my income sources, expenses, accomplishments, and goals, read the full report here.

Examples of side projects making $500+/month

Tons of interesting ideas and revenue numbers on this Hacker News thread. May give you some ideas (or simply some motivation!) for a future side hustle/business idea.

Some interesting ones I saw include:

  • Place Card Me. Provides custom, print-at-home wedding place cards. Making $1,000 a month. The founder of this one shares all his projects and revenue numbers here.
  • Computer Engineering for Babies. A book that helps kids learn about basic computer logic gates. Raised almost $250k on Kickstarter.
  • Wandering Labs. A service that alerts campers of vacant camp sites. Founder reports it making more a month than their day job.
  • Escape Team. Printable escape rooms. $800/month.
  • Stock Events. An investment tracking app that also shows relevant events on your investment timeline. Makes ~$5,000/month. Insight from the founder: "The fact that many other investment tracking apps are either ad ridden, slow or have a bad ux helped as well."

One of my favorites though, is one that almost anyone can do:

"I've earned about $1500 a month for the last ten years helping senior citizens use Windows PCs. I also sell refurbished laptops for about 1/2 of what new laptops costs. I've sold over 200 laptops in the last 3 years.

All it takes is a little patience. I only charge $25 an hour and have more work than I can handle."

If you know even the basics about computers and electronics, you can do this too. The hard part is finding seniors who need your help. For that, you'll need to market where they'll see it (e.g. newspapers, flyers, etc.) and then build your business with referrals/word of mouth.

MANAGE MONEY

Debt 💣

The Average American Racked Up $1,200 of Debt This Holiday Season

According to a survey by LendingTree, most won't be able to pay down that debt within the month, and will instead be paying interest on it into 2022.

This is why sinking funds are so handy.

Take time now to setup a savings account for your 2022 holiday expenses, and start contributing funds monthly. This will make you much more prepared and it'll give you a spending limit, preventing you from spending more than you can afford.

10 Financial Tips to Start 2022 Off Right

Speaking of sinking funds, that's just one example of something you can do this month to improve your finances for 2022.

I recently wrote an article for Eureka with 9 other tips to help you get started on the right foot.

You don't have to (and shouldn't feel pressured to) get all of your financial to-dos in order right away this month, but working toward small goals every week can produce amazing results over the upcoming months.

Market Recaps

📈 Stocks

Source: Google Finance

Stocks had a rough start to the year, with the tech-heavy NASDAQ seeing the worst decline. Sectors like finance and energy, however, saw nice gains this week.

Headlines:

  • Fed Minutes Point to Earlier, Faster Rate Hikes and More Aggressive Tightening (Barrons) - Many are attributing this to the recent drop in stocks (especially tech).
  • US Economy gained just 199,000 jobs in December, far below expectations (NBC) - 422,000 new jobs were expected.
  • Canadian economy added 55,000 jobs in December (Global) - That's double the expected.

🔮 Crypto

The US Feds minutes from their December 2021 meeting (find the headline in the stock section above) seems to have had an impact on the crypto market as well. Most of the top 100 coins were in the red this week.

Headlines:

  • Airbnb users want crypto payments, and Airbnb might deliver (Bitcoin.com)
  • GameStop to create an NFT marketplace (CNBC) - Their stock price surged 28% on the announcement, but has since settled ~11% below the weekly high.
  • Samsung announces NFT support for 2022 TVs (The Verge) - “Samsung is introducing the world’s first TV screen-based NFT explorer and marketplace aggregator, a groundbreaking platform that lets you browse, purchase, and display your favorite art — all in one place.”
  • Eminem joins the BAYC, buying a Bored Ape NFT for ~$462,000 - It's now his Twitter pfp.
  • Australian Open tennis tournament announces NFTs and a virtual Decentraland party (Coindesk)
  • Shopify opened a beta program allowing creators to mint and sell branded NFTs (Shopify)
  • OpenSea valued at $13.3 billion in new round of venture funding (NY Times)

The 50 Laws of Investing

As George Soros said, “If investing is entertaining, if you’re having fun, you’re probably not making any money. Good investing is boring.”

There's really no need to overcomplicate things, and that's why I wanted to share this list of 50 simple laws of investing. If you stick to them, you'll probably do pretty well for yourself.

Here's a sneak peak at a few of my favorites:

  • 1. Forecasts are almost invariably inaccurate and best ignored.
  • 4. The best strategy is the one you can stick with through thick and thin.
  • 11. You either learn to control your emotions or allow your emotions to control you.
  • 14. However much, or little, you have to invest, the best place for it is a low-cost index fund.
  • 35. Saying you’ll buy when prices have fallen is easier than actually doing it.
  • 36. Pain is inevitable and your success depends on your ability to endure it.

Hope you enjoyed this week's letter!
