Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Faith
Is Endurance”
Aim:
Describe how
to have enduring faith;
Become
Convinced
that
we can endure in faith;
and Develop
a plan
to utilize our faith to determine and reach spiritual goals.
Background:
Hebrews 12:1-11
Bible
Lesson:
Hebrews
12:1-11
“Wherefore
seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so
easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set
before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith;
who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising
the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews
12:1-2 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
theme of our new quarter is “A Living Faith.” Our lesson comes
from the New Testament Book of Hebrews. It is one of the twenty one
epistles or letters of the New Testament. It’s authorship is
uncertain. It’s intended audience were Jews who had converted to
Christianity. The writer encouraged them to hold fast to their faith
in Jesus Christ, even with the pressure by some who wanted them to
mix Judaism with Christianity. The theme of the Book of Hebrews is
the Superiority and sufficiency of Jesus Christ as the revealer and
mediator of God’s grace. The author emphasizes the superiority of
Jesus Christ’s Priesthood and the New Covenant to the Levitical
priesthood and the Mosaic covenant. Our study today emphasizes the
need for saints to develop
a faith in God that can endure the trials and hardships of life.
- Hebrews
12:1-2, Believers
Must Run the Race:
In
Hebrews chapter 11, the writer gives example after example of saints
who
exercised their faith in God in various situations and who
held
on to their faith even unto death. Hebrews chapter 12 opens
reminding
the reader of the saints in chapter 11 whose witness is
before them. He also directs them to lay aside the cares of the
world and the sinful lust of the flesh that
can easily distract and deter them from staying the course of
righteousness. The writer uses the metaphor of a race, a marathon,
as
the experience
of living
a righteous life. Running
a
marathon requires training and patience, similarly
living
a righteous life which is pleasing to God, requires that saints
prepare and persevere with patience. The writer presents the life of
Jesus, who is the author and finisher of our faith, as a
perfect
example. Jesus with joy endured
torture, ridicule, embarrassment and ultimately
death
on the cross to pay our sin debt. After his sacrifice and vicarious
suffering for us, he rose
from the dead and is
now seated at the right hand of God the Father.
- Hebrews
12:3-6,
Believers
Must Develop
Endurance:
The
writer further points to what Jesus endured for sinful humankind as
encouragement to his readers to stand strong and
to endure
whatever comes their/our
way. He
declares that
whatever
they/we
are experiencing it is not to the shedding
of blood
for themselves
or anyone else’s sin as Jesus’ sacrifice and torture. The writer
asked the readers whether
they
have
forgotten
the words of encouragement that the Lord had given them when he
called them to
become sons
and daughters. He
also
reminded them to recognize that God’s
discipline is for their/our
good to bring them/us
back to the
path
of righteousness. The writer explains to the readers that as a
loving parent disciplines a child, the Lord disciplines His saints
with a divine
loving intent.
-
Hebrews
12:7-11,
Believers Must Learn
to Accept the Discipline of the Lord:
The
writer reminds
the readers that divine discipline is evidence of the
Lord’s
love for His
children.
Just as earthly parents lovingly disciplines their children for
their good,
the Lord shows His love for His saints with loving correction.
Sometimes discipline and correction is uncomfortable and hurts, but
in the long run it is beneficial to the recipient. Saints of God
must keep this thought in mind as they experience discipline from
the Lord. In
the case of the Lord’s discipline of His saints, it results in a
harvest of righteous living which is pleasing to God.
Take
Aways:
- Faith
in God requires perseverance as we seek to live a righteous life.
- Discipline
and correction from the Lord is part of being a child of God.
- Through
faith in God, Saints seek His Will for our lives and strive to
carry
out His Will in our lives.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Now
faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen.” Hebrews
11:1 NKJV
“"And
that servant who knew his master's will, and did not prepare
[himself] or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many
[stripes]. "But he who did not know, yet committed things
deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom
much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has
been committed, of him they will ask the more.” Luke
12:47-48 NKJV
“For
what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and
lose his own soul?” Mark
8:36
KJV
“But
without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh
to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them
that diligently seek him.” [Heb 11:6 KJV
“Why
are you cast down, O my soul? And [why] are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him [For] the help of His
countenance.” Psalm
42:5 NKJV
“Wait
on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the LORD!” Psalm
27:14 NKJV
“Some
trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the
LORD our God.” Psalm
20:7 NIV
“If
a man die, shall he live [again]? all the days of my appointed time
will I wait, till my change come.” Job 14:14 KJV
