Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Elijah: Prophet of Courage"
Aim: Compare Elijah’s response to speak to Ahab to that of Obadiah’s response to report back to Ahab, Gain a sense of Obadiah’s concerns when reporting Elijah’s message to Ahab, and Act in boldness when speaking the Word of God.
Background: 1 Kings 18-19; Matthew 17:1-3
Bible Lesson: 1 Kings 18:5-18
Memory Verses:
“And [Elijah] answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim. 1 Kings 18:18
Some Highlights:
- God brought about a drought on Israel for three years because of their disobedience. Elijah announced this drought and left. The Bible says that King Ahab, who reigned 22 years over Israel, was more wicked than his predecessors. His wife, Jezebel, was a wicked worshipper of Baal, an idol god of the Phoenician and Canaanitish nations. Baal worshippers engaged in many horrible and lewd acts as part of their worship. Ahab relentlessly, but unsucessful sought Elijah over the years to have him reverse the curse of the drought brought on his land by God.
- 1 Kings chapter 18 opens with God directing Elijah to show himself to Ahab to announce the end of the drought. Simultaneously, King Ahab enlists one of his governors, Obadiah (not Obadiah the prophet who is author of the Old Testament book by the same name) to help him locate pasture for his horses. Because of the severity of drought, grass was scarce. Ahab’s concern for the fate of horses was because the horses were crucial for military defense. Ahab and Obadiah went in different direction seeking pasture for the horses.
- In God’s providence Obadiah and Elijah traveled the same road at the same time. Obadiah recognized Elijah first and bowed down in reverence to God’s prophet. Obadiah confirmed that it was really Elijah. Elijah immediately instructed Obadiah to tell Ahab that he wanted to see him. Obadiah resisted this request. He explained to Elijah that Ahab had been relentlessly seeking him and previous reported sightings had only resulted in no signs of Elijah and the messenger being killed. Thusly, Obadiah did not want to risk his life. Obadiah went on to profess his devotion to God and his daring act of hiding and feeding 100 of God’s prophets in two caves when Jezebel sought to kill all of the prophets of God.
- Elijah assured Obadiah that he would not leave and would await a meeting with King Ahab. Reluctantly but quickly, Obadiah left to delivery Elijah’s message to King Ahab.
- When Ahab arrived to meet Elijah, he accused Elijah being an enemy of Israel who was causing trouble. Elijah responded with the truth that Ahab and his family had brought calamity to Israel by leading the people into apostasy, the worship of idol gods, Baal and Asherah and the forsaking the true God of Israel.
- Elijah challenged Ahab to have the prophets of Baal to a showdown on Mount Carmel to establish the true God. On Mount Carmel, the false god, Baal, was exposed when God brought down fire in a mighty display of Power. After the people witnessed the Mighty Act of God, once again the people returned to recognizing the true God of Israel. That same day the prophets of Baal were slain.
Take Aways:
- God’s provisions and protection are real and are available to all His children.
- With God, we can face any foe or circumstances with the confidence that HE is with us and will either act on our behalf or provide us with all that we need to endure.
- As God’s people, we must stand in faith against all odds which may be against us.
Bible Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4 KJV
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV
“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. ... Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” Ephesians 6:13, 16 KJV
“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7

Tennessee State University (TSU) and Meharry Medical College, two historically Black academic institutions in Nashville, today announced a new partnership focused on establishing a pipeline of African-American doctors and dentists who will provide essential care to underserved communities. The historic agreement will recruit, select and support the medical education of a cadre of African American students who are interested in becoming physicians or dentists. The overriding goal is to increase the number of African American trained health care providers who will stay and work in minority communities that have the greatest burden of health care needs. The accelerated program seeks to reduce the amount of time it takes students to enter medical school. The traditional four-year Bachelor of Science degree will become a three-year program—students will spend three years pre-med at TSU before going on to study medicine or dentistry at Meharry. The result is total completion in seven years, instead of the customary eight years. Students participating in the pathways program will be those with the highest academic preparation and quality. Requirements for admission will be based on a 3.5 grade point average, a score of 1300 on the SAT (two components) or a 29 on the ACT. Mentoring, tutoring and coaching will be crosscutting elements of the program, as will be career and professional guidance for all students involved. 637 New COVID-19 Cases & 15 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for
March 27, 2021
(53 New Cases in Fayette County)
Even with the availability of the long awaited COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people is a monumental task and will take time. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.
