Greetings Farm friends
We hope you are all maintaining a sense of ease as 2022 comes to a close. Thank you to you all for the many ways you have supported Northey Street City Farm this year and we wish each and every one of you a healthy and happy 2023.
There's a few more things on offer at the Farm before we reach the end of 2022 - the really fun one being the Summer Solstice Festival on Friday 16 December from 6pm. There's a great line up of things to do and see and there's still tickets available. Following that on Sunday there is another session of Grow, Share, Yarn: A quarterly First Nations food and medicine gathering, for mob by mob.
Are you interested in working at the Farm? If so, check out the vacancies we have for 2 newly created Manager positions.
There's plenty on offer at the Farm in 2023, starting with a show by The Formidable Vegetable Sound System at the beginning of January.
We are excited to be offering an expanded 8-week homeschool program each term in 2023, with term 1 starting on 1 February. Each term has a different focus which links to the curriculum in a range of ways. The program is a wonderful way for children to learn from the natural world. Find out more below.
We're delighted to be offering a very special Advanced Permaculture Skills Program in 2023 for PDC graduates. There's already a packed schedule already with our Sustainable Living Workshops.
If you are looking for a waste free gift we have the perfect thing with gift vouchers for the City Farm Nursery and Workshops.
Please be sure to look below for the opening days and times over the Christmas / New Year period for the Nursery, Market and Earth Arts. Also, the Nursery have tips for you below about keeping your plants hydrated during those hotter periods.
Thank you for supporting and being a part of Northey Street City Farm in 2023.

THANK YOU

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers in 2022. We had our volunteer end of year party yesterday with a delicious and varied spread of food.
It was great to see so many of you from various areas of the Farm, come together and enjoy the food and each other's company.
To those of you who couldn't make it along and missed the gratitude expressed by the MC and staff, we want you to know what an important and integral part of the Farm you are, and we couldn't do it without you.

Places are still available in our Advanced Permaculture Skills Program commencing in 2023.
We believe that if you want to develop a career in permaculture design or a land-based regenerative enterprise, then the best way to learn is from practical experience and experienced design professionals at an active and inspirational site.
The program is for PDC graduates and will consist of a combination of hands-on work and theory sessions at the City Farm, and site visits to farms and other sites in the region.
You will find all the detail here.

REMINDER........ |
|
.... for all mob out there, that the chance to complete a short survey and have your say on an Indigenous perspectives and protocols resource for permaculture and regenerative agriculture courses, will close in two weeks (31st of December 2022).
None of what you say will be quoted in, or used directly in the resource, but it will be listened to, and considered in terms of the scope of the content—and what mob feel is important to include.

|
|
You don’t have to be a ‘bush foods expert’, but just someone who cares about respectful and equitable ways of being on Country.
Would love to hear from you. Please click on the link below to complete the survey, or email me (info@walkingstory.com.au), if you’d prefer to just have a yarn. Please share far and wide to anyone who might be interested.
NB. This is a survey for First Nations people in Australia only. If you are a non-Indigenous person and would like to make some comment about what you would like from this resource, please email me.
Survey here.

City Farm Nursery
The Nursery will be closed from 25 Dec to 2 Jan but we will be open on Sat 31 Dec for our Organic Market Day so you can glam up the garden before New Year.
We will be reopening again for business as usual on Tues 3 January 2023.
Going away for Xmas? Worried about how your garden will survive during the heat without regular watering?
We've got what you need to help prepare a waterwise garden:
☆ Plant selection - salvias, buddleas, kangaroo paws, lomandra, dianella, dietes & a range of native plants will do well in drought conditions. Come in & we'll introduce you to some beautiful waterwise plants
☆ Add a wetting agent to your soil. We stock Hydroplex soil wetter which contains absorbant granules that increase the water holding capacity in soils by 148%
☆ Mulching will help reduce evaporation & keep moisture in the soil - our range of mulches are suitable for veggie beds, gardens & native plants
☆ Our Olla pots can be buried in your garden and filled with water to slowly release water to your plants for up to 2 weeks
☆ Place your indoor house plants into the sink or bathtub with a few centimetres of water if you’re going away for a short time. Too much water for too long will risk root rot.
Visit us before you go on holiday, we'll help you take care of your garden so you can have peace of mind while you're away.
From the Nursery staff & volunteers we wish you all a relaxing and joyous time.
See you in the New Year.

Did you see that in November, Healthy Land and Water launched their annual report card for the health of waterways. You can check out the health of your local river system here.
For a summary of the region's results, and to find out what impacts the floods had, visit their website and read the summary here.
There are community groups all over Brisbane dedicated to protecting our creeks, like Northey Street's very own Walan Bushcare Group. These groups play a significant role in preventing erosion and protecting habitats for our local fauna and flora.
