This Day in Solvang History

JULE PARADE MEMORIES

Danish culture remains vibrant in almost every aspect of Solvang life. Local residents and tourists alike delight in yearly traditions including the month-long Julefest celebration. The village area is aglow with tiny white lights and adorned with colorfully decorated trees.

A highlight of the season, and a decades-long tradition, is the community Christmas parade. It traditionally takes place the first Saturday in December, although this year's parade has been cancelled to keep the pubic safe from COVID-19. Join us in a look back at parades of the past with photographs and video memories.

Solvang's annual Christmas Parade in the late 1950s featured Santa and Jule Nisser (Christmas elves) riding on Solvang's new volunteer fire department fire engine.

Music and bands always add a lively spirit to Solvang parade. The Solvang Elementary School Band proudly marched in the 1969 Christmas Parade wearing new uniforms that included wooden clogs.

A festive ceremony and tree lighting in Solvang Park traditionally launch Julefest, Solvang's month-long holiday celebration. Due to COVID-19, Julefest 2020 is taking place in a limited capacity.

A fun activity that continues this year is the Nisse Adventure, a scavenger hunt for all ages through downtown Solvang in search of the pesky Nisse, a Danish gnome. He has hidden himself in City landmarks and storefronts all through town. He’s even been spotted at Elverhøj!

We look forward to celebrating together in 2021 and resuming the wonderful Solvang holiday traditions.
