In our constant quest for beauty, the XVI-century Palazzo Bonomini

UNVEILING THE HOME OF KALPA

In our constant quest for beauty, the XVI-century Palazzo Bonomini in Volterra is slowly revealing its essence, the traces left by the passage of time, its secrets, and ancient whispers.

Alongside its intrinsic heritage value, the historical Palazzo Bonomini is the physical home and conceptual kernel of KALPA Galleries, presenting timeless and charming interiors infused with harmoniously arranged meaningful art.

Since 2019, KALPA has been engaging in a major restoration project of the Palazzo, unveiling step-by-step its ancient walls, working with artisans, and using natural materials and local stones, including the beautiful sandstone pietra panchina, which our town's streets and buildings are made of.

The ground floor of the Palazzo underwent the greatest intervention following the vision of KALPA's founder and art director Olga Niescier. A general redistribution of the interior spaces respecting the original partitions was undertaken, together with the “discover-and-integrate” conservation of the wall textures, executed in a discerning innovative manner by the esteemed Tuscan restorer Cristiano Sabelli. While maintaining the principle of protecting the healthiness of historical surfaces, KALPA opted to incorporate MATTEOBRIONI raw-earth finishes, which are soft and warm to the touch, while at the same time being sustainable for the planet.

"The ingredients to greatness lie in our past."

- Lidewij Edelkoort

Embodying the past in our present, in 2022 the Galleries re-opened the ground floor of the building, its spaces ranging from luminous high rooms to underground brick vaults and age-old stone walls. This year, we are continuing to expand to the first floor of Palazzo pursuing the criteria of preservation to honour its authentic atmosphere, and restoring the bond between history and contemporaneity, as we deeply believe that here lies the foundation to achieve a finer future.

A few steps away from the Palazzo along the via Porta all'Arco we have opened a second exhibition venue, the Atelier, a former artisan alabaster workshop. These two distinctive spaces are brought together conceptually by a unified vision, to encompass a sophisticated and elegant layout of eloquent art and minimalistic furniture.

KALPA works with artists from many disciplines offering a kaleidoscope of diverse cultural backgrounds, inspirations, and techniques. The language of the interior architecture establishes a stimulating synergy with the selected art, spanning wall and sculptural artworks in alabaster, marble, bronze, clay and raw earth, wood, Venetian glass, oil, acrylic, and mixed media.

The interiors of KALPA are places of vibrant atmospheres, where international and Tuscan creative experiences are invited to interweave.

Inspiring a rich cultural experience, the magical rooms of Palazzo Bonomini and the Atelier welcome art collectors and visitors from around the world.

At KALPA Galleries you can enjoy the meditative contemplation of our seasonal exhibitions, the devoted guidance of our team in art presentation and consultancy, and the unique energy of our art events, intimate concerts, and meetings dedicated to the treasures of our land.
