4,240 New COVID-19 Cases & 20 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for January 9, 2021
(279 New Cases in Fayette County)
Even with the availability of the long awaited COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people is a monumental task and will take time. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.

Today's Bible Study Lesson
"Called to Significance"
Aim: Contemplate a miracleous catch of fish, Reflect on Simon’s changing attitude toward Jesus, and Hear Jesus’ instructions and eagerly obey.
Background: Luke 5:1-11
Bible Lesson: Luke 5:1-11
Memory Verse:
“ … Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” Luk 5:10b NKJV
Some Highlights:
- Jesus ministry of preaching and healing in the area of Galilee drew large crowds. They seemed hungry for his teaching and amazed by His signs and miracles. The setting of this lesson is at the seaside of Galilee, as many crowded to hear the teachings of Jesus.
- There were fishing boats and fisherman on the shore cleaning and repairing their nets after a long night of fishing. Night fishing was the most productive time to fish because of cooler waters and greater fish activity.
- Jesus stepped into a boat owned by Simon and He asked Simon, the fisherman, to launch out a little ways into the shallow waters. Simon obeyed without objection and Jesus sat down, as was customary of the teachers of that day and Jesus continued teaching those who stood on the shore. No doubt this water amphitheater scene enabled the pressing crowd to hear better Jesus as he taught.
- When Jesus concluded His teaching, He directed Simon to launch out further into the deeper water and to let down his nets for a catch. At this request, Simon respectfully explained to Jesus that he and his fishing partners had fished all night and had caught nothing. No doubt, Simon was tired from his night of fishing and their nets had already been cleaned and repaired for their next fishing trip later in the night. His extensive fishing experience told him that daytime was less than ideal for fishing. Simon ended his mild objection to Jesus’ request with “at Your Word I will let down the net.”
- When the nets were dropped in the water, an enormous number of fish filled them, so much so that the nets were being strained to capacity and were beginning to tear. Simon and his partners with their hands busy with the great catch motioned for his partners in another boat to come to assist with the catch. They came and now both boats were filled with fish to such an extent that both boats began to sink.
- Simon Peter recognized the Divine Nature of Jesus and fell prostrate at Jesus’ knees with reverence and asked Jesus to leave. Simon felt that he was too sinful to be in the presence of Jesus. What an interesting reaction! One might have thought that, Simon would have said you are invited on all our future fishing outings, but Simon’s thoughts were on his unworthiness to be in the presence of the Son of God, the Messiah. The miracle of the Great Catch was recognized by not only Simon, but by his partners, James, John, the sons of Zebedee.
- Jesus responded with words of comfort, “Do not be afraid.” and He added “From now on you will catch men.” This signaled to these lowly fishermen, that they had now received a higher calling and a Spiritual vocational change to be Jesus’ disciples. They would become followers of Jesus, who would spread the Gospel to everyone that they encountered to bring the lost into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
- Luke records that the fishermen forsook all and followed Jesus!
Take Aways:
- Jesus meets us where we are and likewise we must meet those that are lost where they are and share with them the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We cannot sit and wait for the lost to come to us. They are not aware that they are lost.
- Obedience to God’s Word is more important than material sacrifices. We are directed to share the Good News wherever we go.
- We must always be ready and willing to serve, because we do not know when God will use us in the His Divine Plan.
Bible Verses to Keep in Mind:
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and [be] ready always to [give] an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 1 Peter 3:15 KJV
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service. Romans 12:1 KJV
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. James 1:22 KJV
