Step aside lavender. May is the month to see flowers in Provence! Drive through the countryside, and you will see fields of red poppies, wild iris, and wisteria blooms clinging to stone walls and dangling from trellises. Look closely at an olive tree; you may see the tiny white buds that promise to be olives by fall.
May is also the month of public holidays. In 2023, there are four (4) jours fériés May 1, 8, 18 and 29. Some dates overlap with school holidays, so expect busy highways and plan for accommodation and entry tickets. For some people, the answer might be a holiday without a car; check out Julie’s article on navigating the Luberon Valley with a vehicle. As for alternate transport, Steve takes us on a vintage train ride in the Southern Alps. Regarding accommodation, we asked the owners of some of our favourite B&Bs about breakfast and their favourite rooms in the house. Their answers are here.
Looking ahead to August, the owner of Paradise in Provence is offering some tempting discounts for 1 and 2-week stays. Located only 30 minutes from the Nice airport.
