With six different programs taking place in Europe during June, Harding's study abroad programs are back in action! We're excited to once again be taking students to amazing places and we want to catch you up on the past month's adventures!
HUE & ADI
ADI (Art & Design International) and HUE began their June adventures with some much needed rest after their busy adventures in Italy. Group quarantine started on June 1st for HUE and June 5th for ADI, with HUE in a manor in Beachley, Chepstow and ADI in an Air BnB outside of Bath. After isolation came to a close, the groups got their first taste of freedom in Bath and Oxford, seeing highlights like the Roman Baths and the Bodleian Library. Since the two groups arrived in London on the 16th, students have enjoyed seeing shows on the West End, exploring the Tube system, and having afternoon tea in London...on a double-decker bus!
During the month of June, the HUG group spent some of their time in Northern Greece. The students visited sites such as the Meteora monasteries, the city of Thessaloniki, and the archeological sites at Delphi and Philippi. Students had the opportunity to have a devotional at the church of St. Lydia near the ruins in Philippi, where Paul baptized Lydia in Acts 16:13-15. On June 19th, the group summited Mt. Olympus, which has been a highlight for many HUG students since the program began. From the heights of Mt. Olympus to under the sea, some students went snorkeling near the campus, later in the month.
On June 4th, as HUE, ADI and SURF’s time in Italy came to a close, HUF’s adventures had just begun. Since this HUF trip is only one month long, Robbie Shackelford’s jam-packed itinerary took students on a diverse array of adventures spanning from the bustling city of Florence to the coastal town of Cinque Terre. In addition to seeing iconic sites like Brunelleschi’s Dome and the Uffizi Museum, students took part in fun activities such as basket weaving, painting and cooking pasta from scratch. Due to the ongoing pandemic, students had a unique trip to Pompeii as they experienced the ruins in a crowd-free environment. After Pompeii, the June HUF group completed their trip with a visit to Rome.
Since SURF’s (Summer Undergraduate Research in Florence) arrival to Italy, the group of biology and chemistry students have split their time between conducting research in Meyer Children's Hospital in Florence and visiting iconic sites in the city. SURF had the unique opportunity to interact with ADI, HUE, and HUF, participating in activities with each of them such as painting class, museum visits, and climbing to the top of the Duomo. On June 3rd, SURF went with ADI to Rome, visiting historical treasures like the Pantheon, Colosseum, and St. Peter’s Basilica, as well as enjoying authentic Roman cuisine. SURF shared the end of their trip with HUF, taking Tuscan day trips to Stia, Casentino, and the Pieve di Romena.
Scholars Abroad is a trip that provides incoming freshmen the opportunity to travel to Greece and stay at the HUG campus for two weeks while taking a three-hour Bible course, which includes visiting amazing sites in Greece. This year's Scholars Abroad group visited Athens (Parthenon, Mars Hill and more), Corinth, Delphi, Meteora, Sounion and Thermopylae. In addition to those locations that the program typically visits each year, the group also visited the Greek island of Santorini for a few days. Check out the pictures below of their time in one of Santorini's archeological museums, as well as the beautiful coastal views.
If you will be an incoming freshman in the summer of 2022, you are eligible to attend this trip next year.
